The Road To PS5 and Rampant Consumerism | The Retro Perspective

I realised that one of my points was a bit unclear about "How games have been made like this for a while and an SSD would merely allow this to work faster" When Mark Cerny was explaining about how textures could potentially load in behind the player as they were turning, he made out like this was a brand-new thing that would be possible with PS5, when in fact, this is exactly how the Decima Engine works. It does it really well. It does it on the PS4. That's what I should have said.

As someone who loves his PS4 and has a huge library of games for it. I’ve got to be honest in the current climate it’s hard to get excited about the PS5 or any kind of consumerism. I’m finding myself trying refrain from buying anything as let’s be honest we don’t know where this is all going. I feel that the post CV world will be very different to the pre CV world unfortunately.

I've seen this fake upgrade coming all along. I skipped ps4, still playing on ps3(when I'm not loading up an emulator), and still having a blast. I will definitely be picking up a ps5 eventually, but I'm not the type that needs the latest and greatest all the time. It definitely is the quality of the games that matter. You can do a lot with a game no matter what kinda numbers it's built on.

What I dissagree with you most on is graphics. Exploration is a big part of gameplay for many types of games and is improved by better graphics and so I don't think it's right to treat them as seprate things entirely. I do think simple enviroments some times are better too and why I think Minecraft is so popular and Tomb Raider you mention is made more fun by the very clear block design of the levels as you always feel like you know where you stand with the game with the simple layout. But I like the more beutiful enviroments too, they both have their own merits. Will PS5 offer a good enough leap? It remains to be seen. I am still very satified with the PS4 Pro, though Dreams makes it sound like a vaccum cleaner and makes me want a PS5 when ever I am on it. Digital Foundry did a video of, look how much better Gear 5 is on the new Xbox.. Looked almost the same to me. It wasn't like Last of US on PS3 Vs PS4 or the first Gear of War Remake/Remaster.

Great points mate and I think you're right about there not being a huge need for the next gen. Unfortunately it's being forced onto us so soon we'll have to move just to play the new games. I feel like xbox needing to move to next gen has put Sony in the position where they now have to.

Right there with you when it comes to how far we come with consoles at their end-of-life cycles; the fact that THAT is when we truly get to see the machines really begin to shine before they're shoved aside for the latest and "greatest." And that's not even the cheapskate in me...
The hack, indie, and retro development scene shows just how much more life there still is in ALL older consoles and this simply solidifies the fact that it's not the power or specs of a machine but the quality of the game it's playing.

Without fanboys, where would Sony be? Microsoft wins on pure power and performance... They can announce more powerful specs without worrying about the weaker PS5. Sony needs fanboys to keep promoting a weaker PS5 console
