No "old" car manufacturer wanted to sell electric vehicles a couple of years ago. So they designed the ev always worse than the combustion counterpart to up-sell them but still want the serve the ev market. Now the coin flipped and the market and governments (and even the environment) want only ev's and the manufactures are f* and have to change design and whole production lines and prices ... thanks tesla :)

I am a native german, and when i got my driving licenses in the 90s, my first car was a 1987 W124 sedan. I LOVE THAT MODEL!
I drove it everywhere. At the end it had ~400 000 km on the odo. And then a BMW driver thought, my mercedes is to long and shortened it by crashing in the back.
Caused by age and odo, i got nearly NOTHING from the insurance. So i bought a Mitsubishi Lancer. However, i would love to see some of the old values came back to Mercedes. The 5 spoke AMG rims would be great for EV. Spoilers not really. These do downforce by destroying top speed and range. Yes in countries, where you have 100 kph / 65 mph as a topspeed it's not such a difference, but here in germany we are allowed to drive as fast as we want. And at speeds 200 kph / 130 mph a spoiler makes a big difference. And that is the reason, the EQ series looks like it does. To max out range by reducing drag.

I love the new Hyundai cars. I have seen the new Staria on the street in white, with white wrapped windows. It looked like a shuttle from STAR TREK. That is soooo damn amazing! The new N 74 is a nice looking beast. I wish they would bring out a small series of that model, that is driveable on normal roads. normal interior, useable height, just the basic design. I would buy one, if it is priced right....

I agree 100 percent, Mercede used to be so special, I loved them and miss their unique designs, today most look very generic and just sticking AMG badge is sad

To be honest i thought that all Mercedes are AMGs today. It means nothing anymore.

My dad actually worked at AMG in the late 80s, he didn't have anything to do with the designs but he did cnc machine parts for the cars, he also has a love for the boxy and wide amg era, when I showed him the EQ AMG's and told him that it was an amg he looked at me with disbelief

Bembli made me feel fairly bright for my taste in buying the car that sits in my garage, the CL 55 AMG.
I fell in love with the CL 55 AMG when it was chosen as the Formula 1 safety car. The roof line, missing a B pillar, gave the car a very lovely line extending from the front end to the end of the trunk.
Then, AMG put a 5.4 litre engine and added a supercharger to run the horsepower up to 493 bhp. I managed to find one close to home and was thrilled to be able to bring home a silver Silver Arrow.
I bought the car 3 years ago and I'm still thrilled to drive a car that can nearly hit 200 mph, if it weren't for the 155 mph limiter that Mercedes puts on all of their production cars.
Irrespective of that minor issue, I mean face it, when am I going to drive faster than 155 mph on a public highway? Sorry, I have no issues with my car. The interior is excellent, and the engine and transmission are excellent, so the car is just fantastic.
I have to extend my thanks to Bembli for buttressing my love for the design of my CL 55 AMG.

mercedes in general goes in the wrong direction with their designs. The worst is their interior, the current e class interior is just amazing but everything in the c-class, s-class and even eqe/eqs looks way worse.

people are upset that amg is going back to its post merger roots. Hardly looking different than the mercedes model, but faster. That's about it. get over it

Well, they dont change so much because it costs money. They just make the bare minimum, a new bumper and a few badges. Bigger fenders etc. would require a bigger change, or more parts, so it would cut into their profit. They do the minimum to make a bigger margin.

the late 1990s mercedes 600s v12 is the best mercedes. the newer mercedes cars look like whatever chinese cars and not like what a mercedes would be. mercedes was a big, heavy, mighty and luxury noble car, now it looks generic like whatever chinese car. Like another guy wrote, take the mercedes badge of and put a honda bagde on it, people will think the mercedes is a honda. That late 90s 600s v12 but with 2000hp electric motors on all four wheels, that would be a grear car, with an all aluminiun body, so it wont rust.

Unfortunately AMG will never be like that again. AMG have been too successful. They make more money selling A180 "AMG Line" then selling a proper AMG.

IMHO - Mercedes, like BMW, beginning in about 2000 the money counters took over the company from the engineers. They both still make great-looking cars, Dependable Not So Much. How can we make this vehicle cheaper and cheaper and still charge luxury prices? When your $20k Honda and Toyota routinely go 200k with only maintenance and not repairs, while Mercedes and BMW struggle to make 100k without repairs. Buy Mercedes and BMW NEW - no one in their right mind buys used over 100k - and plan to ditch after 50k before $$$ repairs begin.

It's not only the AMG, the Germans have totally diluted and destroyed their brand image. Back in the '80s, '90s...there was something special about owning a Merc or BMW.

These days Audi, BMW, Merc are more common than Fiats. So why would anyone pay thousands more for a car, service and extortionate parts for brands that are less special than Renault, Fiat, Ford, Peugeot, etc?

I don't see the point of an EQS AMG at all. Being an EV I assume it's just prgrammed to be faster and thats it.

CLK63 black was in a league of its own

back in the day they would also sometimes make 2 amg models in the same generation mate. Look at the w202 C36 and the C43 or the C32 Kompressor and then later the C55 in the 2000s. In the 2000s there was also a C30 CDI AMG. And all of these were properly fast so what do you mean.

Today's AMG is simply an incoherent mix of elegance and aggression. The result is blobby pretentiousness more than something handsome.

Because manufacturers are sellouts now and will trade legacy for profit. They are literally ruining nameplates just to sell more models off of hype.

Nobody wanted an electric Mustang SUV. Nobody wants a Corvette SUV. Civic Type R's are a dime a dozen. You can pick up an A35 AMG for the price of a Chevy Traverse. Cars that used to be considered fast are being humiliated by rich soccer moms in their Durango SRTs.

Seeing a badged car used to actually be exciting. Now almost everyone has one and cars that used to be cool are completely uninteresting. I have a newfound respect for classic cars now, because at least they are actually unique.

I definitely am not a fan of Mercedes design anymore. Their old designs were perfect and now they are like trying too hard to look cool but it doesnt work at all

you are right about the fact that amg models should be different in comparison to their normal version in terms of design, but you can’t complain about the design of the whole lineup itself, that’s just a personal opinion that not everyone can agree with.

AMG lost its prestige when Mercedes started selling models that were no longer hand built engines. Most AMG models today are just normal cars with upgraded rims and a more intense throttle map

Those 90s era AMGs were really special, particularly the Hammer. Nothing special since.
