Those winged Mopars are flat-out the very best cars that have ever run in NASCAR and absolutely legendary cars on their own.

I also believe Hamilton spun him out on purpose for sure, lot of corporate shady business going on during that race.

if you ran a chrysler 340 with dry sump bore 4.04 stroke 2.974 305 ci /heads fully ported open single plane nascar intake with fully modded heads 2.02 1.6 valves 14:1 compression and cam with intake lift .0867 and exhaust lift .816 8000rpm 725hp 8500rpm 766hp would be able to fully compete with any nascar car out there you would need the added compression for the destroke

The 355 engine was a bored and stroked production-340 6-barrel engine block (LA) that we modified for racing use. The modern 355 that we did in 2001 when we got back into NASCAR racing is a purpose-built race engine which has nothing in common with any of our old or new LA engines. [The 355 block was common to all racing applications before 2001. quote Ed Poplawski

Great review. Great info. Amazing how corporate racing is. I think if fans back then knew how manufacturers actually stunted the growth of tech, power and speed, they would have asserted much more influence.

Super cool.. my old neighbor owned a mostly mopar junkyard in moline Illinois. He had a 305 trans am block and crank he had always planned on putting in his 70 t/a challenger. Sadly he never got around to it because he got lymes disease and basically drank himself to death because of the pain.. he also had a torn down 77 “kit car” in his barn that was supposedly a former nascar.

Cool video Andy. I was 6 when all this was going on. Of course at the time I had no idea of what was going on, I just thought it was cool to see the crashes. ( dumb kid ) I have much respect for life now !!! That being said I think that little 305 had a really good chance to win. Just goes to show how inefficient the vehicles I love are. All of the small blocks back then were so restricted by the cylinder heads. My how things have changed.

This is a great story, and ya wouldn't put it past the players of the era to take out the small block that actually hit 1st place a few times. hard to believe that aerodynamics can make up for the power of 120 CI, even with restrictor plates in play.

I think the car was still competitive even with a tiny engine, but it probably needed a better driver to make history. However, 426 engine speed is complete insanity, 217mph in open field is just mind blowing

The 305 was performing beautifully in the Daytona, I'm pretty sure he would have won ,if not for that incident. In Trans Am ,Plymouth didnt have any luck with the 305 ,they kept on blowing up ,I wonder why? I think there would be more stress on it in Nascar.

This history just shows how much advanced that dodge was over Chevy, ford, my opinion dodge was not treated fairly witch goes back to rules in nascar...I think they should b only 3 rules number 1 take a car straight out of the factory dodge,Ford, Chevy... number 2 safety equipment installation... number 3 and a smart driver and go at it now that is the way it started so why change it and f..k restrictor plate racing you might as well run a 4 cilender engine well I want to see the best from the big 3 don't all fans?.... I say this to nascar cut the rules so that dodge will join stock car racing once again!!! And let the fans watch some real racing and watch just how many more people that will b a fan of stock car racing now if you ask me for the big 3 you will progress from that but that is just my opinion from a NC country boy that loves racing and I'm a wood's brothers fan all the way now get that after all the things I said good about dodge...

Lots of irony with Pete Hamilton, the 1970 Daytona 500 winner, being the one to knock the Charger Daytona out of contention in the 1971 race. The nickname at the time for the 5 liter engine was the sewing machine.
