Let’s just be brutally honest. It’s rewarding because it pays extremely well and better than most of the bs jobs out there that don’t require a college degree. An individual can literally make $500 to $5000 or more in a day with an install or two for a few hours or more a day off of just 1 or 2 calls.

I am curious if having just a hvac career certificate from a local college will be enough to have a long and lucrative career? Potentially even starting my own business one day. I am 28 and deciding to go back to school for HVAC. The school I am applying to only offers a 12 month certificate program. I will be applying for an apprenticeship while completing the program. As I develop my skills I am open to relocating to other states for better pay. More so interested in commercial than residential. I know this career will be tough and come with many pros and cons however I am excited to transition into a reliable career that will allow me to become financially stable. Any advice is appreciated.

A career in the field of HVAC would be an excellent opportunity for young men and women who have graduated from high school and don’t want to be a bum living inside their parents house or couch surfing or being a homeless bum begging for money.

I know nothing about AC units nor furnaces and the thermostat very confusing. The one at my house used to always have leaks from the ceiling and it would soak the filter and it would always have to get replaced. I'm gonna have to look up the basics to this stuff so i can DIY instead of bothering the landlord about it all the time.

Oh man. Building automation, but hvac in particular, is a field I would recommend people at least looking into. I studied initially for industrial automation, but I prefer the culture around hvac.

I do both technical support, service calls and programming for projects and stuff. It's simultaneously pain and pleasure: satisfaction when you see stuff running and people being comfortable, and frustration when it's not working the way you thought it would, or should be.

There's also the opportunity to be some kind of teacher for newer people who might not know as much as you do, while you are still always constantly learning new things.

Despite being held to engineers' minimum demands, i often have plenty of room for any kind of subtle optimisation (ex: transmitting data over networks in a more efficient way whenever possible or following certain ASHRAE recommendations such as heating supply air temperature limits), creativity (putting tools to help make field technicians a little easier) without being crazy, etc...

Based on personal observations and, as a regular homeowner, how much I've been charged many times for HVAC service and repairs (even in a small town!), I'd say yes, it can be a great career choice. I have an Ivy League masters degree, and I've never in a job made the kind of money I see blue collar HVAC guys earn. A close friend makes over $500,000 as an attorney at one of the nation's biggest lawfirms, and I've told him "you're in the wrong business. Go into HVAC repair!" Sounds like a joke, but I wasn't really kidding. Now comes the part of this discussion that will SURELY draw the ire of many working in the HVAC field. This is where I have to conclude that a large portion of the HVAC business appears to be abusive and shocking overcharging customers. I have tried to learn a few things to do some of my own maintenance, and I realize things such as some very common fixes involve nothing more than replacing the big capacitor or the switching contactor. I have enough background in electronics and electrical items to be at least able to do these things, plus swapping out a few other parts (once diagnosed as faulty). We had a 2nd house in a nearby city, and I would describe HVAC business there as extremely in-demand and brisk --- because nobody likes it when the A/C fails! This friendly very happy repair guy arrived once, worked quickly to unfreeze a copper line, replaced the stuck contactor, and then quickly left after explaining that his $1200 charge be Zelled directly into his account. No waiting for a check to clear! On to the next job! He happily admitted he was doing 7 jobs that same day, earning over $7000, and be done working by 2pm so he could spend most of the day having fun water-skiing! To me that is just shocking and crooked! The $9 capacitor he replaced was billed to us at $260 plus Labor! The $9 contactor he replaced was billed to us at $260 plus labor! And that was less than half of his charges for this hour's work. Does this sound honest? I surely could never work in such a business where it is so routine to crush ordinary people with gigantic overcharges for an hour's work. Sorry, I'm too honest to treat people that way. He even told me that one customer offered him an extra $500 just to come on a Saturday, on top of whatever charge there would be, and he turned him down. To finish this rant, surely there is a middle ground somewhere, where HVAC repairmen can work for a fair wage. But is it a good career choice?? I should say so!!! I'm making a campfire later so I can burn my Ivy League Masters Degree...

Hi I have a bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering and a master's in sustainable energy from UK.
Now I am moving Canada.
How can I start my career in HVAC as I do have experience of working as quality control engineer but I want to now move up HVAC and for this reason I have done my dissertation in heat pumps as well because I loved the idea of making buildings more efficient.
Never felt attracted to HVAC before but after learning about heat pumps and calculations I started to like it.

Any help would be appreciated

Before i even try HVAC Im doing heavy research into the money. Ive been burned by too many trades. Being a rip off and a lie not paying what they claim. Welding, mechanics, water utilities and cdl driving. Most companies are running a scam trying to pay everyone in the bottom %10
