This pisses off Britain, but America can ease tensions with Britain by offering an alliance with them for the future which helps Britain avoid any possible issues in the Americas. This is Pax Britannica, so that is a win to them. Americans won't like it to say the least, but with Haitian help (which many also won't like), Unionists can more easily defeat the Confederates.

While I agree this could never happen, if President Brown did manage to hold on to the Upper South, the war would be over more quickly. He would never tolerate the over caution of his Generals (such as McLellan) and embrace those who were prepared to win even if it meant massive casualties (such as Grant). So battles like Shiloh or Antietam happen earlier (though not necessarily in the same places) and the South is forced to surrender sooner. If the war had been won by late 64, the Republicans might be faced with a dilemma - do they replace a triumphant President Brown (who they'd probably think - correctly, IMO - would make a lousy peacetime President) in favour of a relative unknown (let's say Lincoln)? I'm not sure it's certain which way they'd go (Grant was a lousy President but the Republicans still put him up for re-election in 1872 because he was the premier war-winning General and similar laurels might be attached to Brown).
