I don't flash the top card, just in case the spectator is a freak of somekind like my friend, who 100% of the time will remember it and backtrack the trick instantly. Instead, I do a rough fan or spread and on the square up do a 'master move' to peek the corner under my hand where its impossible for anyone but me to see. I also dont hold up the cards, I peek the second card on the lift and hold them flat where neither of us can see them. As well, the larger motion of turning them from that position better covers the switch. It has a lot heavier impact if you don't look at the cards before revealing them.
