Several generic steps are associated with the development of numerical indices or classification of environmental quality or pollution potential of human activities.
1. Factor Identification
2. Assignment Importance Weights
3. Scaling Establishment and Factor Evaluation.

Based on this Environment Index Method, Environmental Performance Index (EPI) is developed to rank countries on their progress toward mitigating climate change, improving environmental health, and protecting ecosystem vitality.

EPI provides a data-driven summary/ tool to track countries’ progress towards meeting UN Sustainable Development Goals and other international policy targets.

In 2024, EPI integrates data on 58 performance indicators grouped into 11 environmental issue categories, three main policy objectives, and one overall EPI score for each country.

EPI ranks highlight leaders and laggards in different aspects of environmental performance and provides practical guidance for countries that aspire to move toward a sustainable future.
