WoW Classic vs FFXIV Shadowbringers - My Thoughts

Every QoL thing people demanded over and over that was eventually given degraded from WoW. Doing dungeons and PVP on your own server, where you got to know everyone was priceless.

story explained entirely in dialogue/story shown through cutscene with dialogue for emphasis
ugly robe looks just like an earlier one but different color/GLAMOUR PLATES
try hard toxic community who will ignore any help asked and is basically a solo game for console/interactive possitive community that actually rewards you for helping others
stuck with class until you make a new character/one character can max all classes
blizzard dev team/yoshi p + soken

verdict: wow gets by solely on the nostalgia factor, just like runescape. its a dead game.

Classic is trash, filled with bots trains, blizz does nada about it; and it made me sad; so i stopped giving them my money. SE on the other hand...

If it didn't require a retail sub, I'd probably play Classic. I really don't want to prop up the complete shitshow that retail has become though. Yes, I played vanilla. Holy Priest. My first raid was Violet Citadel. It took me too long to level a healer to take part in MC etc.
I vividly remember waiting at the Dark portal with what seemed like thousands of other players with all the AOEs going off and about 1fps. Waiting for BC to open.

There would have been no reason to launch classic if they fixed retail and revert all the changes they did to lose over 7 million players.

I loved classic , the feeling of adventure. Retail is mostly mundane.

Also played PVP/Raiding rogue in Vanilla. You said it well: because everything is a pain in the ass it's more memorable. More earned to me. There's something better about grinding monsters for hours than doing 100 MSQ just to progress into HW. I barely remember WoW's story, but I liked being a nobody who became somebody vs. a world where every player is the chosen one yet consigned to the most menial of tasks at times. Wow feels grittier, but FF14 so far feels more relaxing. And I'm 29 now instead of 14-19 for WoW back in the day. Still believe the expansions, especially Shadowbringers can save this MMO for me. 22 quests to go til HW...

I can't play the game again after already playing it before. It just feels like a move of desperation from Blizzard since retail is a failure. If they released this a long time ago, I would have.

Ya playin classic again was great............for about 5 months, then I realized why WoW is a one trick pony. That’s just me though, play what makes ya happy.

I have no dsire to play classic right now as I have never been one to look backwards when it comes to games, HOWEVER... when BC gets added to classic I will have to SERIOUSLY consider it.

Dungeon finder changes was the WoW killer for me and many others. It basically meant you didn't need friends anymore. And friendships are born and strenghtened by helping each other. When you stop needing your friends and they stop needing you it becomes a lonely place. I know it saved a ton of time to enter a dungeon, but at the expense of making it meaningless.

i tried to go back and play classic.... and it just not the same. I played it from the start, and almsot feels like slap in face to want to go back and do all the progression again. Nothing can bring back those days, those memories. It all just a falsehood to fool playerbase.

Classic Wow sounds like FF11 online to me. Whispering players from afar to group with you. Asking white mage taxi to holla port. Waiting 10 min for airship. Getting lost on the way. All that hardship just to accomplish what Duty finder has done instantly for us today.

Loved questing in Classic. Had to read and explore. I wish FFXIV had world like that outside of MSQ. It had similar nice community feeling FFXIV has. People talk and help each other. Need a quest done in a dungeon? Np, i just "waste" my own time to help you for 2h to gather deviant hides. That happened to me and it felt good.
I actually like that i'm not the hero and that other guy is not either. I think that's weakness of FFXIV and GW2. When everybody is special, nobody is special and i hate that feeling. Still, atm i'm playing FFXIV and not Classic, this happened over a half year ago. Just wanted to comment

I never played WoW classic, but you describing it gave me flashbacks/is VERY similar to me playing FFXI back around 2004, and man...I miss those days.

I've been playing 14 since it released on the PS4 and would only leave it for... ff 11 classic!

i played a warrior in vanilla, did it again in classic and it was fun, until max level where it stopped being fun, not for the content but too much has changed. It's BiS farming and nothing else, I found it tiresome whereas i loved vanilla because nobody knew what they were doing or what BiS was, everyone knows all the tactics so you miss the fun in spending hours wiping then doing stupid stuff to pass the time with your mates in raid like in AQ40 doing a bug mount conga line because Huhuran was being a bitch xD (which also helped us all to bond). I dunno, it's the little things that made it special for me back in the day and none of that really exists now :(

About BC, I certainly hope so. I would buy the game again and subscribe just to play BC, if activision arent complete idiots, they will release it. I think it'd be epic if they put in a transmigration quest in vanilla to move your character to BC and then same thing for future expansions, eventually bringing you up to speed on live. It would add so much more replay value to the game. Having old cut content be available would be a huge draw, nostalgia has already proven itself to be a huge money maker. I'm sure some completionists would play through 14 years of expansions to have a chance to have the scarab or rhok or what have you.

My time in wow classic beta was enough to have a bit of fun and rediscover why I have absolute no interest in going backwards.

All this talk about the pain and suffering being what makes it worth it sounds a lot like Stockholm Syndrome.

i start to wach yours videos early and i quit wow too, but my reason was that i not acept the fact that a game actually in 2020 work with a graphyc motor too old, wow had nice lore beautiful zones but its too ugly. We need a wow 2 new version

I played WoW back when i was like 7 years old with my dad so i always have a glint of nostalgia and love for WoW... but FFXIV really ruined ALL other mmos for me (in a good way :') ) I've tried going back to older mmos i used to binge, but all i do is complain "ah, the UI isn't like FFXIV", "ugh, the combat isnt as flashy or impactful", "wow, this boss had zero mechanics".

I left Classic for FF14. Played Vanilla on a private server for a year prior to the launch of Classic to scratch the itch of a hype, but quit after 3 months still having 3 more months of sub. After you hit 60 the game is pretty much done. You set yourself on a rails of weekly raids where here's no real challenge or PvP that ends in 5-15 minutes, and that's all. While p-servers are some kind of a sandbox, the Classic has this "play pro or leave" feeling to it. Dislike to the Classic community :( Maybe should've tried RP servers, I dunno.

There should be a pet battle system in FF14; make it use an ATB (Active Time Battle) system like the old SNES/PS1 Final Fantasy titles and have a 3-4 pet party. There could be PVE and PVP battles (Lords of Verminion doesn't count/it sucks).

You think WoW classic was pain? hah aha hahha hhaaa... Try Everquest classic. "Has anybody here seen my corpse?" "Train to zone!" and all the rest of the great memories.

the endgame classic community completely ruins it for me. They metafied the game to the last centimeter. TBC private servers have huge core issues so there is no established meta like that.

I'm glad I waited to play classic and never played it before. Played final fantasy I think I just don't like the final fantasy universe. I really like playing trolls elf's etc over bunnies and chocobos and that shit. And of course who can forget the wonderful barrens chat. Best one so far is naming murloc movies.

I understand the draw. In my case, though, I love FFXIV and am enjoying it a lot right now. On the one hand, I'd like to go to a world like WoW Classic again. On the other hand...part of games and life to me is lore and exploration. WoW's world I know. I've been down that road, I've been over that mountain - I know what's on the other side. MORE THAN THAT: I know what comes next. I know that Outland comes after, then Northrend and the Lich King. I know that the Legion will eventually invade, after the Mists of Pandaria open.

...unless they go an "alternate timeline/history" thing with Classic, which there are no indications of.

Not only do I know that world, I know it's FUTURE. I know what will happen in the timeline/lore. It's kind of going back and watching a ballgame or mystery movie that you loved as a kid, but you know how it ends. You know all the twists and turns. Sure you may enjoy it, it may spur memories in you...but it's you trying to recreate an OLD MEMORY, not to MAKE A NEW ONE. Does that make sense?

It's a reason that I'm not going to play Classic (much less pay $15/month for the privilege), but I would play a similar game like Pantheon or Classic if they were to add new things or take it down a different story. Kind of like what you said about why you aren't raiding: Everyone knows the fights.

I also am wondering in 6-9 months, once people have done everything, will all the friendliness and excitement wear out?

Flipside: I LIKE being "one of many" adventurers. I DON'T like "the world revolves around you - well, and all these OTHER heroes of the realm". When everyone is special, no one is. It's also one reason that, even in FFXIV, I tend to lean towards Jobs that aren't "one of a kind". In FFXIV, there is ONE White Mage in lore. YOU have the stone of A-Towa-Kant. But there's only ONE A-Towa-Kant, and thus only ONE WHM Job stone. Contrast this with the MCH, where the Job stone even says "Unlike other soul crystals, the surface of this multi-aspected stone has yet to be carved with the record of past deeds.", which the BLU Job stone says as well. This says to me "THIS is YOUR stone. It's not one from someone who has come before." It also says to me "there may be others..."

This is true to a point with SCH (you learn in some of the SCH Job quests that there are other SCH stones, which implies that other SCH you run into in PF has one of those stones), and the PLD as well...though it IS pretty clear you have a SPECIFIC one of those stones.

Although I grant sometimes, it is pretty epic to be THE hero - "Take it...we fight as one" can't hapen if you're one of many - but I don't like stories that ALWAYS revolve around your character. Until ShB, FFXIV was the story of the Scions and Eaorzia. The business about the WoL being a Paragon...

Anyway, these are just my thoughts.

I know a lot of people playing Classic and loving it, and I'm super happy for them. But FFXIV is my game now. I finally kicked the WoW crack habit, and I don't see myself ever going back to it unless they seriously change things and make it where it's a game more like Classic but with new content and new lore. As you noted, they have to be wondering how to bring people to retail...

And now, due to recent events, WoW refugees are jumping ship to FFXIV.

After Blizzard's concession to China who it loves so much I'm done with all versions of WOW. Time to take my meager monthly elsewhere. Playing WoW from 10/2005. I guess it was time to end.

I just started wow for the first time last month leveled to 60 than...realized...I wanted to play ff14. Honestly, ff14 has just won my heart within my first week.
