Only lazy for humans, the machine looks like he is working mighty hard.
ОтветитьGood video good points made. Using a wheel I'd say is the 2nd best method CONS? If you're not experienced its easiest to make a costly mistake on possibly expesive knives. Which I'd think you'd want to use high quality "whet stones (JP)". Whetstones...high learning curve....need to put in the time to get the strokes into muscle memory. If casual "sharpener"....you're not goig to do a good job...better to get a commercial manual sharpening device or possibly an eletric that do't do the best job but best for casual "sharpeners (people)". OR take the knives to a qualified sharpener you KOW uses whetstones...
ОтветитьDamn you got some harry legs bro lolz thanks for the tip!
ОтветитьSo your stropping? It’s basically a strop
ОтветитьI sharpen mine in 10 seconds with a stone
ОтветитьYou are destroying the heat treatment of the blade. Cardinal fault.
ОтветитьBrilliant! Thank you! Very much sir!
ОтветитьYes finally you need a professional grinder, a professional workbench plus the hut that goes with it. Me when my knives no longer cut, I buy new ones, it costs me much less...
ОтветитьBeing a bladesmith for 40 years i hone my blades using diamond hone....ones from EZE Lap are great....work especially good on alloy steels...stainless etc.
ОтветитьWow I thought that was a buffing wheel at first! You have some brassies if that knife catches that plywood it's gonna bounce it off the wall and into your head. Be careful. I would definitely try it though. I started typing this before you specified to turn the bench grinder around.
Ответитьlong time hand sharpeninger from the razor edge book of sharpening. nice ides but why not just get a buffing wheel for the grinder?
ОтветитьAwesome video, thanks man!
ОтветитьWait people actually didn't think to do this? It's literally just an automatic grindstone
ОтветитьA knife that is near sharp in that time. not one with chips in it.
ОтветитьFortunately I don’t shave my legs.
Ответитьgreat video good to hear the full explanation with the run through keep up the good work. I have a trend chisel sharpener I would prefer to do this method once a week 🙂
ОтветитьVery helpful! ThanX a lot ! 👍👍👍 (Isenbüttel, Germany).
ОтветитьThanks mate I've been looking for a new way to do this, I'll give it a try. Liked.
ОтветитьI made one today and since I am skilled that way I got a couple of cheap knives and tried it on them before using it on my good knives. Very effective and quick
ОтветитьEasy bloke to listen to thank you mate😅
Ответить8 minute 21 second video. Videos titled 60 seconds to sharpen
ОтветитьOnly one thing.. never cut paper with a knife or other sharp tools as there is glass in some papers and that will damage the edge. 😉
Ответитьstabilize the wood(not the edged) with resin and mineral additive before using, to get a more explosion proof wheel.
ОтветитьBut the machine is not available everywhere.
ОтветитьI have an ancient power drill that my dad bought a mount for. I have sanding/grinding wheels that I chuck into the drill to smooth jagged metal edges. I will make your setup and see how it works-it is simple, which I like.
ОтветитьYo! This idea finally got taken and produced! I saw pretty much the exact same thing in the Lee Valley catalogue, going for CAD $110 for 8" and $140 for 10"
ОтветитьYour method is good , but you did not address the secondary edge , knife has 2 edges , secondary that is above primary and primary that you are sharpening . If you do not thin out the knife as you use it and sharpen it , the V shape will become duller and duller , so as you sharpen you need to sharpen both edges , most knifes have it .
ОтветитьI live in a condominium apartment where do you suggest I install this grinder?
ОтветитьThis was a great thing to make, I suck at stones still so when I need a knife sharpened, this is my go to
ОтветитьI wonder how good would be this method for shaping a tool (as by example, a new chisel) as opposed to only sharpening / polishing an already shaped one. My struggle never was this final phase of the sharpening, where you just maintain it, but the very first phase, when you set the shape of the blade.
ОтветитьCool… What about using a paper wheel?
ОтветитьI bought a 3 inch bench grinder at harbor freight i made about 20 mdf wheels to sharpen knives i hope it works.
ОтветитьVery F'ing stupid! Do this and get hit in the face with plywood chunks when the cylindrical force breaks it. Dumb!
Ответитьcut your wheel with a router and you won't need to turn it.
ОтветитьFastest way to jack it up to. You gotta be able to keep the knife steady taking it across the wheel. Not easy to do.
ОтветитьCool idea!
ОтветитьBeen using this type of sharpning for several years. It works extremely well. You can even get carbide lathe tools super sharp.
Mfd board works very well
"...any polishing shops will have it..."
What's a "Polishing shop"?
I was just about to type some outrage here as I thought you were suggesting that one apply the blade to the wooden disk as it spins toward you. That would be VERY dangerous.
But then you addressed that.
Thanks - saved me from making a fool of myself.
6 years later...does it need to be plywood? I'm surprised to find plywood is very expensive now. I have solid wood pieces I could cut to size and cant imagine any real reason they wouldnt work but I acknowledge there may be an issue I haven't considered.
ОтветитьNice solution if you don't have a belt grinder (as a knife maker you really should though), and don't feel like you can justify spending a ton of money on specialty bench grinder wheels similar to the ones on a Tormek.
ОтветитьThank you for this video - great tutorial and super safety information as well. A++
Ответитьpeople dont get that razor sharp doesnt mean good . a good sharpen is when the geometry is even all the way throughout so the blade doesnt drift to one side when cutting . or so that the blade stays sharp longer and doesnt chip etc . making it sharp is easy . the rest is what makes a good sharpener
Ответитьthis is stropping not sharpening
ОтветитьWhich english do you speak?
ОтветитьLearn how to sharpen a knife. You're not going to have your little grinder out there when you need it.
ОтветитьGood Video; Thanks!
ОтветитьI use a file LOL
