Cormac Cullinan's talk from Day 3 of the Centre for Law and Environment's Green Rights and Warrior Lawyers Academy and Inspirathon. The talk is moderated by Kirby Manià, professor at the University of British Columbia School of Journalism, Writing, and Media.
About Cormac:
Cormac started his legal career in maritime and international commercial law with Shepstone and Wylie and Maitland and Co before specialising in environmental law and governance in 1994 when he established EnAct International in London. Today few lawyers can rival the depth and breadth of the environmental law and governance expertise which Cormac has acquired in working in more than 20 countries over two decades. This includes: designing the “architecture” of public and private sector governance systems that promote sustainability, drafting contracts and legal instruments (ranging from international treaties and declarations to national, provincial and municipal legislation) litigating, advising businesses and social entrepreneurs on greening their enterprises, and developing legal compliance systems.
He is also an internationally respected author, speaker and advocate for ecological sustainability. In 2008 he was included in a book profiling 301 extraordinary environmentalists in history and in 2012 he was won the Nick Steele award for the South African environmentalist of the year.
Cormac loves wild places and creatures and spends a lot of time thinking about how to build socially just and ecologically sustainable communities within industrialised civilisations. His work in pioneering a legal philosophy that restores an ecological perspective to governance systems (Earth jurisprudence) is internationally recognised. He has addressed the General Assembly of the United Nations and many other international conferences, and led the drafting of the Universal Declaration of the Rights of Mother Earth.
About the Academy:
The First Annual Green Rights & Warrior Lawyers Virtual Academy and Inspirathon seeks to inform and inspire interested people around the world about the role of law in securing environmental rights and justice.
This innovative program mobilizes the power of stories to bring issues of environmental rights and justice to life and inspire action, as nine courageous “Warrior Lawyers” from around the world share their stories of advancing “Green Rights” through (or sometimes despite) law.
The Academy spans nine sessions over three days (Oct 18, Nov 9 & 10, 2022), each featuring a public talk by a leading Warrior Lawyer, reflections by an academic commentator and audience Q&A. Each Warrior Lawyer will tell their story of mobilizing law to advance environmental rights and justice, and close with a call to action aimed at prompting audience members to act upon what they have learned. The talks will be streamed live over Zoom, recorded and posted online.
