The ending didn’t give peace it gave a lingering sense of dread. And that’s exactly why it works so well. It haunts you after the story ends.

It seemed like time in the MC's world was passing faster than expected given the description of the change in time of day for his initial return compared to the time change on the trip back to the other world. Also, if time was so far out of whack constantly, they'd almost never get animals crossing over on the other side, so why watch for them? This leads me to believe that the passage of time between the worlds is variable, constantly changing, but likely still progressing at roughly the same rate over a long enough absolute time-frame. I'd say there is hope that next winter he finds only a year has passed on the other side, roughly. One potential setup is that time is passing at a variable rate in each world following a waveform. You don't notice from the perspective of your own world because you have no fixed point of reference. If both worlds follow the same pattern, but out of synch or at different frequencies, you can get trips where 1 day is 4 months, 4 months is 1 day, or anything in between depending on the absolute timing of the jumps from a universal frame of reference. Both worlds could very well average out to a rate of 1, but still give you massive divergences between the two.

The whole story has 'long dream' vibes. Junji Ito's story did well describing the concept, but it's been around in various forms for ages (like Narnia) and probably most or all of us have had a similar experience. The idea is that you have a particularly long and vivid dream that involves a whole life in another world. You have friends and possibly even family there. Maybe it's a good life or maybe it's a struggle, but you grow attached to the people either way...and then you wake up. There's a real sense of loss and a desire to return. If you've had a dream like that, this story hits hard at the end. It's the strangest sense of loss, mourning for someone that never existed.
