My favorite band since the early 80’s. Saw them live in Stockholm for the first time in 1985.

I’ve seen level 42 many times in the 80s and he originally was the drummer and decided to move to bass because they needed a bass player.

My opinion - you are completely out of your depth talking about Mark King!

Playing bass and not knowing Mr King's work is like saying I didnt know water existed until I was 40yo.

I think what this shows is that you should never set your face against an entire genre or even a sub-genre. I don’t generally like rap or country but I would never say I don’t like either genre because I recognise that excellence in either genre could exist.

If you are a bass player, you know Mark King!

Mark King originally leared to play drums. That's were he got the rhythm from.

Lets not forget Mark King would also SING whilst doing all this as well!

I find it difficult to believe that any bass player hadn’t heard of
Mark King, I’ve been a fan for years and saw them live. At their peak, around 35 years ago, when Mark used to fly around the stage while still playing. Amazing performance

Been a Level 42 fan since the mid 80s. There's a live album called "A Physical Presence" that I wore out from playing it so often. They still tour and are probably the best live band I have ever seen. So much going on it should be a mess... an absolute onslaught but somehow brilliant.

Mark started on the drums, so he incorporated the rhythmic aspect of drumming in his bass playing, that why he plays like this

The tape on his thumb is just padding for protection because he splits his thumb open if he doesn't cover it up, because he's so aggressive.👍

Hmm, not seeing it here, but for those who don't know the essence of Mark King's slap style is the left hand slap. He will thumb slap the low E, then slap his left hand fingers onto the strings to mute the E and create a percussive sound. Then he'll follow that with a muted thumb slap, so you have an E-x-x and maybe a muted pop to complete the quarter note. That's how he keeps that 16th note groove going without duplicating sounds.

Terrible band. Best to ignore. Should have played jazz.

Status graphite basses were a big thing in the late 80s and into the 90s. Their website is awful but their basses can still be bought for the 2500-3000 Euro range.

Mark King is an amazing base player, not a one trick pony. Pure Class. His guitars are custom made. He started off as a drummer btw, which is why he is so in tune with the drums.

I am a massive Mark King fan hut I think your right I wish he would tone down the treble...never used to be like that only when went to Status basses

He is absolutely amazing!! The album version is slower than this live version, also 1980's live versions more like the album version you really need to check those out, I think they are better to be honest

In the UK anyone over 60 would know who Mark King is. Slap hadn't been heard by many people before Level 42 started having hits and it caused a bit of a sensation at the time.

OBVIOUSLY This isn’t the song, but “Something About You” is my all time favorite song. Mark King is thee bass guitar god.

Level42 should be at the same level of fame as Zeppelin The Police Floyd etc....!!!
