How To Build a Pokemon Deck (Getting Started in the TCG)

I'm from MTG. Search cards are what we call tutors. It's really amazing to me how many of these cards appear in decks that are legal and seem to be part of the game's identity

Down to preference and use what you like, but what if I'm tired of "rule box" pokémons with around 300hp?
I really wish the game wouldn't have these at all since back in the day stage2 pokemons had something like 100-120hp and that was "a lot".
I can get behind something like 160hp but these 300'ish numbers are just way too much and seem nearly mandatory, considering how rare those cards are.

I really hope they would've never added those in the TCG, to be honest... Now it feels like you can't win without using them since they're just way more powerful than other cards.
And yes, I'm aware that they give 2 prize cards instead of 1 when defeated, but if they OHKO most things and can take an insane amount of hits back, they're just way too powerful to pass on.

So I come from having played MTG for years and am just getting into Pokemon TCG.

What I'm looking for is the different strengths of each type of Pokemon. For instance, in MTG green decks tend to have really powerful creatures that take a lot of mana to play, OR black decks have either zombies which are tons of not-so-powerful creatures that can raise from the dead so you can overwhelm the opponent with numbers or black decks could be vampire decks where most of the cards are supposed to drain your opponent's HP to zero without needing to attack with creatures. I'd like to figure out what Pokemon types can do what kind of stuff beyond "This type is weak to this type."

I COULD just play prebuilt decks as a beginner but I'm a tinkerer at heart. I got into I.T. because I like building computers. I got into paintball so I could purposely upgrade my paintball marker, etc. etc. I'd rather lose with a poorly built custom deck than win with something I didn't make myself.

I started off in the tcg live to better understand it. Only things I didn’t see in this video that I highly recommend is looking at ACE spec cards. You can only use one but man they are busted. Poke Vital A heals a huge amount of damage, hero’s cape gives a massive health boost, master ball lets you select a card without any drawbacks

My long term goal is to build fairy deck, but for now I'd like to build a psychic deck featuring mimikyu and/or mew. It will be my first deck so that's why I'm not doing fairy yet

I don't know if you're still looking at comments, but I would love some advice. I originally come from magic, but a buddy of mine got me slightly interested in pokémon. I want to build a deck around grumpig, a stage 1 with a version that lets me search out two energy and attach them to any pokémon, and mawile, a basic that has a version that deals 30 damage per attached energy. I'm a little hung up on deck distribution, because it's much different from magic, and there are just so many cards to go through to even begin to try to build a deck.

I understand this video is 2 years old, and this'll likely not be answered too mich but, im looking to get into the tcg due to the mobile game coming out. I've always wanted to learn and play this since i was a kid but never learned and don't have my cards anymore. So the app feels like an easy way to get into it without the big money sink of the actual cards. I've played mostly hearthstone and magic in the past and feel there is a lot of overlap after playing the gameboy game. Are the rules of thumb in this video still applicable for the game, or is the game changed heavily? (Sorry for the long comment)

Hey, Thank you for the video. I just started playing with my partner and a couple of my friends. Where could I find info about formats and what's banned and what's not. We have a bunch of EX starter decks cause they were available at Walgreens and are no looking at understanding the game at deeper levels. I come from Magic the Gathering and so am used to rotations and what not but I can't seem to find info on what Pokemon's Standard and Eternal formats. Any help Would be appreciated.

I mainly play yugioh but I recently got a tote full of Pokémon cards from a friend so I thought that I might as well learn how to play it too. Is Sawk, Scrafty, and Lucario a viable starting point for deck building? I’m looking to do a fighting/dark type deck, or should I stick to single type decks until I get the hang of playing it first?
