I started at 9 & stopped at 15 to focus on studies. I am an Engineer now & play chess as a hobby with a rating of 1900.

I think it doesn't matter what age you start; if you are talented enough, you can play consistently at the level of grandmaster anytime. BUT...playing enough tournaments to be officially ranked as such is a different matter. There are only so many tournaments in a given year, so that could take years.

Starting at 3 doesn't mean everyone will reach 2100, its actually an amazing rating

Calling Bull on the “gotta be younger than 11.” Chess is a board game, through and through, and we board game nuts master games very quickly, lol. The best players are the ones that you cannot read, and that’s why there isn’t a ton of GM’s, it’s a circlejerk of playing the same moves and expecting different results. 😂

Can someone explain to me why age is such a barrier to becoming a grandmaster? Is it simply because you don’t cultivate the right habits early enough to be become a grandmaster?

In general, I’m not sure why age plays such a barrier to competitors success in a format that relies more on the mind then on physicality

Preparation is exhausting, don’t get me wrong. But when you’re older you can prepare smarter, rather then harder as compared to someone younger who will more likely train harder then smarter
