This one was more of a Star Trek T N G episode than a movie. So it was adequate and that's about it

"Admiral Akbar" is a fitting amount of disrespect for that guy. Trek > Wars always.

Cassie - if you want to understand what happened in the movie, watch yourself DeepSpace9 AND Voyager! Do NOT continue with the movies until you've done so, or you'll NEVER understand what happened!!

I think this is a better movie than it gets credit for. I think it was just a disappointingly small film after First Contact. But, just as you yourself suggested, it was very, very much in keeping with an episode of the series. Which I think is cool.

Having only watched it once when it was released and not rating it at the time, I was mistaken. It's actually really good!

In the interest of preserving your newfound love of Star Trek, I would strongly urge you to skip Nemesis and just start in on DS9, which takes place first chronologically anyway.

The Briar patch and Brer Rabbit is a reference to a Disney movie they wish they could burry but can’t. Songs Of The South. He outsmarts Brer Fox.

Bre'er Rabbit is a reference to an old Disney movie that was removed from circulation in the 1990s. It is called "Song Of the South" and featured a beloved character called Uncle Remus. The movie was frowned upon because it showed Uncle Remus as a happy character, though he was enslaved. Problematic in modern times.

What you said about this feeling like a long episode of TNG was exactly what was said at the time this came out. And a lot of people where not happy about that, because they wanted another First Contact, with lots of high stakes, but I feel it holds up well.

Donna Murphy, the woman who play Anij is a multi Tony award winning musical theater actress, who is probably best remembered for her role as Mother Gothel in Tangled, also played Otto's wife in Spider-Man 2

For me, the next movie (Nemesis) just doesn't feel like Trek. so I consider this one the "farewell" to the TNG cast. It kind of brings things full-circle, with a more lighthearted TV-stye adventure, a beardless Riker. It wraps up the stories of Picard, Data and Riker showing them all learning to have more fun and gives a sense of hope for their futures.

I like Insurrection but it doesn't come close to First Contact but the real problem is the small stakes it feels like an episode idea expanded for a movie. Good but not a big event movie.

It's not nice to tease Star Trek fans by pretending there were more movies after First Contact. A lot of us older fans are still upset how Star Trek simply disappeared after '97.

So I'm gonna venture an unpopular opinion here. My take is that everyone involved in this was wrong, and that letting the people stay on that planet would have guaranteed intergalactic war. There's not an empire in the galaxy that wouldn't have committed every ship in their fleet to conquering this planet and harvesting the secret of immortality. Klingons, Romulans, Breen, Ferengi, the Dominion... all would have gleefully slaughtered every man, woman, and child in the Federation to get what that planet had. The best thing Picard could have done was evacuate the planet, dig up the old Genesis Device plans, and put a torpedo into that planet with everyone watching.

Br'er Rabbit is from Song of the South (1946), done by Disney. In the film, Uncle Remus tells three tales of Br'er Rabbit and his foes, Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear. It's live and with toons. Worth a watch.
