Having a rivalry in any sport is a healthy thing, because it makes the adversaries give it all and compete for the win and shows respect. When you stop being adversaries and become enemies that is cancer and it mustn't be excused. Nobody in any sport should be excused for such behaviour.

Oh, and also watch Rugby's Hardest Tackles. Ruff Boyz.

To those who haven't played competitive sports at a high level. It takes a crazy level of work and dedication to get there. When one goes down, with a serious injury, every player on both teams, or his opponent, will come to give aid or show respect. You may see what appears to be hate, is actually on the edge of total commitment, every resource being drawn upon. Hockey players from opposing rivalry teams often spend the Summers training with each other. They may be on opposing teams but may have grown up together. When the opening whistle goes off, all gloves come off.

In my opinion the biggest show of humanity in sports is in ice hockey. During the NHL playoffs, they shove, punch , push, and fight each other in what are best of 7 game series. When there is a winner each team lines up and everyone shakes hands.

My favorite good sporsmanship is of a womans softball game. A player hit a home run to win the game but while runing the bases twisted her ankle and could not stand or walk. The home run does not count until you touch each base and you are not allowed any help from your team. SO the opposing players picked her up and carried her around the bases stoping to let her touch each one to complete the home run even if it meant by doing so it would turn a win for them into a loss

The soccer one centres on a 6 year old boy called Bradley Cooper who had cancer. He knew he was dying, but still set out to raise as much money as he could for research. He was being carried by Jermaine Defoe who really pushed for others to donate.
The athletics at the end was UK runner Derek Redmond pulling up with hamstring trouble & his dad came out of the crowd to help him finish despite security trying to stop him.
