Looks like a really good method for baby quilts and picnic quilts that will need to be washed.

serger stitches with two needles and seals the edges after cutting the fabric with the overcast stitch. 😊

Can this method be used for a t-shirt quilt?

Thank you so much for this!!! I am a beginning quilter who is 100% self taught/mad sewer. I have 2 blankets I started making blocks for. Now the projects have gotten too big if I sew the blocks together to quilt. I don't have patience for sashing. This is a method I can 100% use for both and I think they will look great now. I had decided to abandon them but now I want to try this. Again thank you!

I am late to the party, but I will try this method! Having made several QAYG quilts with sashing it is not easy keeping the sashing straight on larger quilts, guaranteed somewhere there will be a shift. I would guess as far as the added bulk in the seam it would be similar to adding two-sided sashings. Thank you from Ohio!

Thank you for this video. I'm so glad I found it. I was getting discouraged with my quilts and struggling with the joining-with-strips method. Thank you, again!!

If you just leave the edges loose and extra fabric, you can do a frankenbatting join and then add the top and bottom layers. With the batting not folded it's still show-worthy.

THANK YOU! I've tried Quilt as you go before and absolutely HATED making all those little sashing strips. This is such a great way to do it. I'm thinking of getting a panel and quilting it, then adding several borders around it using your method. Great way to quickly make donation quilts.

I'm new to quilting and only want to do QAYG, have been trying to figure out how to QAYG an existing pattern (that is not QAYG but is in blocks) without changing the pattern's measurements. This might be THE way! So, I'll have blocks with applique on them, and that's the front. Follow pattern instructions for all those first, then add each square one at a time, layering as I go like you did here, quilt it, and then add the next one .... this should be my answer. (The pattern I'm looking at is WallFlower at Missouri Star Quilt, which uses 10" layer cakes for the blocks/applique).

I tried asking in a FB group and I got "there's lots of YT videos" and that was it. Everything I saw was "I designed this QAYG pattern....", when what I wanted was to use an existing pattern I like without screwing up measurements or having to add sashing. But, here you are, I found you, and I think I'll practice this a bit. Thank you!

I have been looking for a way to do a crazy crumb quilt as I go where I dont have use sashing or make individual squares, and have straight lines that go all the way vertical and horizontal and this could potentially solve that!!

I would like to try it, bit unsure that it would work as a bigger quilt as you would still be hauling a big quilt through the machine. Is it necessary to use the overlocking stitch?

I am excited too.Just what I was looking for! Best QAYG. Only thing I'd do different would be to cut batting 1/4 " smaller to eliminate bulky , stiff seam. I'll use adhesive spray or clips to keep in place. Thanks for taking time to do video

What if you add the top and bottom piece and then lay in the batting? When you quilt, it will hold it in place and maybe won't have bulk at the seam.

If you put the time and love into a quilt for someone they should not worry about a seam being a scouch thicker. I think you did great. I now have a new method so I don't have to use sashings which look like a window

Hi Kristin, sooo I went to my fabric store and there's no way I could afford the price of batting now! Are they crazy?! Soo, I'm thinking of using white flannel for the batting. I use to use flannel for making diapers way back in the day, but even that was expensive now. Luckly I have flannel to use. What do you think? I should be able to use this method still right?

The idea is good. and I want to give it a try. If you are joining actual blocks, am I right to assume you have to have extra "margin" on each side so you can join and then trim without affecting the design within the block?

Thank you. I really like this method. I tried for the first time yesterday, but I've made a mistake I think. The first "column" I did I was trying another method that required folding a seam in the back where the blocks were attached. I did leave a good seam open to attach another "column", but it looks like I'm going to have to deal with folding in a back seam. The next time I try this method I will start off the way you show here. The way you're showing us is so much neater than that fold over seam in the back.

I just love this method ! I want to try this with a small pc like you did for the center. Then I was thinking of using 2.5” strips from a jelly roll to go around it like the log cabin block. I have a bunch of rolls of 2.5” batting I need to use up. I would cut the strip of the jelly roll, backing, & the strip of the batting roll longer like you did. Do you think this would ok ? 😊
