I can see how preventative maintenance and repair is a constant need to prevent costs piling up.

Ive always been curious... How does one make an income while sailing... As it may cost the same as living on land ... But everything i know how to do reqires a single point of operation on land .

In my experience home ownership in a decent neighborhood has been far more expensive. Unless you just everything go to fail, upgrades, maintenance, and taxes just don’t make sense any more. The sum of the parts is greater than the whole. Can’t wait to sell and blue water cruising currently just sail the Great Lakes all summer.

im not sure a diesel trawler is much more expensive in the long run if you can do the work yourself. not much rigging to worry about, and hull integrity from hanging a giant keel

You really should take your loss opportunity cost as "rent." If you paid 150,000 pounds for the boat, that would generate potentially 15,000 pounds annually in earned interest. And, she's got to be deprecistjng, optimistically 5,000 pounds per year, posdibly 8,000.
So your annual "rent", the cost of housing for the year, is some 20,000 pounds.
Finance majors can argue the details--but that IS a real rent cost.

Boats are depreciating assets, houses appreciate.
Boats maintenance is 10%pa, house maintenance 1%pa.

Wtf is a quid?

I only sail single hander dingies myself but was told early on by multiple people at the sailing club that owning a boat is just a void to pour money into quickly.

I do get the appeal though of living on a yacht with solar panels and wind turbines to improve self sustainability, and being able to travel around. I'd go a step further and get into fishing to try live off the sea so only fruit and veges are required from markets 👍
