Whenever a kid in a work of fiction says they went somewhere because "a man" or "a woman" (rather than another child) told them to, took them there, etc., I give up on them. If they don't understand you don't go with or trust strangers, they won't grow old, so you might as well start grieving their loss early 😛

It was almost frustrating to see this guy beating himself up throughout the story while never really lashing out at the deadbeat mother. No one is that saintly.
