Premiere of "Spectrotalk with Andy" at the Roulette in New York City, played by Hub New Music, commissioned by I-Park Foundation. August 2024.
Composer’s note:
In this piece, I put together an artificial spectralism in a conceptual context. The repetitive sound masses change in small steps but with meaningful discrepancies compared to the passages before. This process is inspired by the perceptual results of serial works by Andy Warhol, like the “Campbell’s Soup Cans,” in which the lithography technique, at first observation, makes the soup cans look identical. In truth, there are many discrepancies between the can images. The whole image and the composition of the cans together create the effect of the work.
As the main theme of this piece, I play with the visual impression of the cello part, which simulates the effect of lithography. In this conceptual context, the other instruments build artificial spectral "comments" to the "lithographical cello," developing the piece into a dramaturgical narration.
