Great interview with Patrick Duffy. Everything from The Man from Atlantis, Dallas (even a Knots Landing shout out), Step by Step and B&B. He was so classy and discussed everything with great detail. The only thing I thought was odd about the Dallas discussion was there was no mention of the main storyline of the show which was Bobby & Pam (aka Romeo & Juliette). Of course, maybe he didn’t want to discuss it but he mentioned (or was asked) practically about the whole cast except Victoria Principal. Anyway, keep up the good work. These interviews with these actors (I’m 59) always me look back at happy times.

If questions are being entertained for a future video, I'm curious to know his view with 20/20 hindsight as to why he left Dallas - did he have grander career aspirations, or was he just tired or fed up or something?

Enjoyed all of these series immensely, but Patrick will always be the Man from Atlantis for me. I was such a major superhero, comicbook and sci-fi, and even water-theme fan as a kid. So his show was made for me. I really wanted him to be Aquaman without a doubt, but also me and my buddies kept wishing his series had been done as Namor the Sub-Mariner (a name, shockingly, now part of the mainstream popculture). And in keeping with that we really hoped for him as the Man from Atlantis to appear with Bixby-Ferigno Hulk. Doubt they'd do it now, but it'd still be cool to do a cartoon movie with Patrick voicing the character, the way that Adam West did with Batman in a few cartoon movies in recent years. Another great interview.

As you know, everyone lived and breathed Dallas back then. It is incredible to think there were only 3 tv channels back then. I lived in a dorm at West Tx. State Univ. (now it is West Texas A&M Univ.) Canyon Tx and a time or two, another girl would come over just to watch Dallas. Oh my, that Charlene Tilton was a cutie too!

He says of Victoria Principal who plays Pamela. "I have never even conversed with her off the set. But on set we have a great working relationship I think it's because we play such a lousy people."
--------
Being paired with VP (whom Duffy calls"the upstage artist of the world "was difficult at first." We were in constant state of competition, we were very territorial in front of the camera.
Their relationship improved during Dallas'third season when Duffy made his debut as director " I developed an appreciation for her and I think for the first time she started to trust me".

"you can only play boring Bobby Ewing boy scout type, for so long" he says..... "After the divorce" says Patrick "I thought Boy Bobby will start dating like crazy. The producers said no I had to be good. But we were always sort of getting back together because the couple was so firmly established in the minds of the audience that scriptwriters couldn't walk away from it.

"when Pamela went nuts and was admitted to a mental hospital I thought the time had come for Bobby to run off the rail... Find a woman who's got some action. But he continues as before. There I was trekking off to the hospital everyday with flowers and a sympathetic expression when I really feel like giving her a good slap. "
Patrick says the producers want to keep Bobby a Polly Pure heart who would never abandon his wife. The viewers would just never accept him going off with another woman. Duffy points out :" it's a pity but I'm stuck with boring Bobby ".

I've had the privilege of talking to Patrick Duffy several times myself, both at the Dallas reboot and for a Paley Center carpet for The Man From Atlantis, and my biggest takeaway is how kind and grateful he is. He seems to celebrate his past work the same way we all like to talk about it. I'm very happy for him that he's found a great partner in Linda Purl and I will always welcome him to my TV screen. Another great interview, John!

Ok, this is crazy, but, in my back closet, I still have the “Who shot J.R?” t-shirt I bought back then. (I’m a Texas female. Haha). My young (6 yr- 8 yr or so) son and I were ready for Friday night shows. He loved Knight Rider, so we’d sit and eat our dinner in front of the tv and watch that. I don’t think I missed an episode of Dallas. We also both watched (and LOVED) The Incredible Hulk on Wednesdays. Yes, audiences HATED the dream year! To be honest, when it happened, you felt like you wasted soooooo much of your time to watch it and then… nope, it didn’t happen. 😡 😂

@thatsclassictv I’d love someone to ask him or Linda what the original plan a story was for the Dallas season 2 reboot if Larry hadn’t died. I read Cynthia say they planned for plan A only with Larry for all 15, till they had to pivot. It would be nice for someone to come out and tell us what the original end game of s2 was

Patrick Duffy is EITHER the greatest actor in the History of The World, OR he is being genuine and honest in this interview.
I think it is the former, and it's very refreshing to hear an actor tell the truth! Thanks Patrick Duffy. This is a GREAT interview.
