I've heard that too that it was only that one source that Arabic writer that described the Vikings as inked. And the way I interpret that personally is that it was most likely war paint rather than any kind of actual tattooing technology. Because as you say there's definitely not any archaeological evidence of tattooing needles or anything else they might have used to imbue permanent ink into their bodies but war paint or similar ideas would definitely make a lot of sense for the culture.

If the Greek Trilogy made Greek Mythology more exciding than the actual myths, the Norse Saga made the Norse myths more boring than the myths. I truly hope we're done with this Sad Dad Simulator BS and can either go back to the good ol' hack-and-slash badassery of the OG games or just put this franchise to rest. Or better yet: remake the original trilogy. These new games are held as the better games than the original only because of the graphics and less corny acting. If you'd put all the tech and refined performances into the OG games, no one would even look back at these new games.

What if the runes being out of place is the result of being written long before they arrived…

Could the ruins actually be a purposeful choice to show that the story of the game takes place long before the Viking era, and that these stories have been past down from centuries before. So when the Vikings retold these stories they used more modern language for the time, like how when we write medieval stories now we don’t use old English that is accurate to the time.

This theory could not work at all to someone who knows the runes and languages better, but it sounds like a pretty decent theory on first thought.

Would LOVE to see an analysis of HellBlade with Dr. Crawford. Much more artistic license taken with that one, but would still be cool…
