The knife seems more like a novelty item than an actual reliable tool.

I think the EMT version would be great for a back-up car knife. Something to put in your pocket if you leave the house without a folder, or use the rescue hook to cut seat-belts, glass-breaker to break glass, etc... Thanks for the review.

Very good review, BoyScout... very detailed and picked up some pretty fine points that are important to how a knife performs. The tools, however, don't look too impressive. I have some experience with Chinese Kershaws, and they're... well... not really Kershaws. This series of knives kind of looks like hardware store checkout lane gadgetry that you might throw in your cart and wish you hadn't an hour later. The good news is, they're cheap... bad news is, they're cheap.

In agree that the EMT version looks good for a center console knife that doesn't see a whole lot of action, although, that makes the price a bit high. That might make it more suitable as a gift. I am surprised the EMT version doesn't have an oxygen bottle wrench. Why do these companies think bottle openers are soooo high on our priority list? =\

Swing and a miss there, kershaw. Just think about how many more tools they could have fit on that big knife if they would have ditched that stupid carabiner.

Honestly, rescue hooks just don't work very well unless they've got a fresh edge right out of the box. Personally I always go back to my 8$ set of trauma shears for exposing a patient's wounds. Also no 02 wrench on the EMT knife? That's what every "EMT" marketed tool needs!

@ntstick06
@ntstick06 - 27.03.2013 21:56

you need to try a benchmade resuce hook, the 8med or 7. I carry one of those instead of shears, they dont cost to much and i still havent had to sharpen mine yet and i use the crap out of it

Ответить
@ntstick06
@ntstick06 - 27.03.2013 21:57

and you can eaily use the bottle opener to open an bottle on the kershaw if you need to

I have a BM hook 5, and am not impressed. The only thing i use it for is opening up 02 bottles. Trauma shears will out cut a hook without any exertion.

To each their own i guess, I do agree the 5 hook isnt that great there isn't to much real estate to get a grip on that's why I dont carry it.

"intrigued" is a good word & I felt the same way. Good point about steel & the multi-tool knife roll. Definitely a tough market for them to crack into. Got to hand it to Kershaw for diving in.

Looks like the hex key on the EMT will double as a O2 wrench. Would make sense if it does, but if not a huge miss.

What you are talking about with the saw blade is called "set." It provides relief for the blade as you make the "kerf" as you are sawing. Regular saws have the teeth bent into its set and there is actually a tool that does this.

Great Video, Thanks For Doing This For Us. I Had Been Looking At The Funxion and Wasnt Sure Which I'd Like. But After Seeing This It Made My Decision Very Clear. The Only One Worth Paying For Is The EMT. I Mean If You Ask Me The Carabiner Is Pointless! Yea It Kinda Looks Cool? Kinda I Guess? But Its Pointless! Replace That Side With Scissors Or A Small Straight Blade, An Awl...ANYTHING But The Damn Carabiner! LOL

xCRxxMOV steels are 99% of the time made in China as that entire family of steel is Chinese produced. So this knife is Made in China.

Speaking of Leatherman these remind me of their old bit driver knives. As for the rescue knife I have a feeling one would be better served with a dedicated hook blade like the Z-Rex (points for reversible blade and integrated glass breaker) or the Benchmade hook which seems to be adapted for cutting clothing off of the area around broken bones or to make room for bandages.

If I'm not mistaken, they came out at the same time, and these are quite different than the Triage in style AND the Triage isn't the first knife to incorporate tools into a knife, Leatherman, Gerber and even Sanrenmu have been doing it for far longer, just saying.

Great review, covering both the weaknesses and strengths of each...
One comment about the EMT version.. having worked as a first responder in the past..
Kershaw really missed the boat by going with a hex wrench rather than an O2 wrench (which would be really handy opening and closing the valve on an oxygen bottle)
I'm a fan of Kershaw- I live just a few miles from their US factory, but sometimes they miss... these Funxion knives come across as gimmicky to me.

The saw was binding because you were putting downward pressure on your cut and either end was pushing up pinching your blade. Put it in a vise or if cutting right off a tree

Got an EMT Funxion (by accident, because walmart had the wrong knife in the box) and so far I love it. Great speed of open. As silly as it sounds,  the bottle opener works fantastically with the jimping. Idk if that was even intentional by Kershaw, but it works well. The cord/seatbelt cutter is nice too and I'm a sucker for a glass-breaker tip.

As an EMT myself, I would like the EMT version more if they added an oxygen key for the bottles we use, instead of the hexbolt thing.

The EMT was actually my first knife. I work in a semi-technical field, and I use all of the functions at least occasionally. In the two years I've had it, I think I'm ready to move onto another EDC however. For day to day use, it's just a little overkill for what I do when I'm not working. At most, I'll use the bottle opener or the screwdriver. And for the weight of it, it's just a bit much. If I were to use your categorization, I'd classify it as more of a EDC+ kind of knife. The weight and extra tools are just a little more than I need daily. I do plan on keeping it for use when I work though, as it fits those needs perfectly.
