I adopted a fantail goldfish baby from PetSmart a few days ago. It's in my 20 gallon long aquarium alone. I can't believe how adorable he is.

I’ve been keeping fish since I was in middle school. I’ve had goldfish in the past, comet and one of those fat ones with the growth on their head. Got them from petsmart petco one of those places. I’ve never seen one in those stores that stood out to me like the ones I’ve seen on YT like yours. I’ve been to both of the professional fish keeping stores near me and neither of them carry goldfish at all. I’ve found some online but gosh it’s a lot of money to spend on one goldfish. I don’t want a big one either. I’d rather watch it grow. I want it to put it in my 40 gal planted aquarium to eat all the duckweed and snails that I have overtaking the tank. Any tips on where to find what I’m looking for in the Massachusetts, Rhode Island area is appreciated.

I have 7 goldies in my 55-gallon tank - 4 Shubunkin (one is Sarasa), 2 fantail and what I think is a common that was sold to me as a Shubunkin. The fantails hold their own pretty well. Looking forward to getting a 75-gallon as soon as I find room.

Fantails and orandas are honestly my favorite types of goldfish (along with black moors), and I love that they’re some of the hardiest too

I kept a pair of fantails in a 55 gallon as a beginner (lucky break huh?) and if I ever get into keeping goldfish again I’d definitely start with a fantail or two, and I’d love to try orandas once I get the hang of providing diligent maintenance but I’d still worry about that wen growing out of hand

What do yuo think abut a ryukin? I read they are good beginner - Better than oranda?

I finally got a tank but haven't cycle it yet. I'm going to start with 3 juvenile Ranchus once I get it cycled. I'm excited! I learned so much from this channel and do some research. Yeah i agree. Fantails are hardy for sure. Mine is in a pond that evaporated almost halfway and the fish survived

I got 3 fancy goldfish as an impulsive buy from the pet store. Now they have a 250L tank and have gotten so big! They were very cheap and tiny, they basically have changed into completely new fish. They were my first goldfish and why I got into the hobby. Your videos have helped a lot with avoiding some beginner mistakes

you can keep fancies and comets together, it’s just a little extra work but it’s definitely doable. granted the temperament of your specific fish is super important.

i’ve got two comets and a black moor, they all get along great. the black moor was being kept with comets and shubuken at the petstore, so i decided i’d try him out since he was going to be living with single tails regardless. he’s been working out great, i’ve found if i kinda create two separate drops of food everyone gets all the food they want. i’ll hand feed him occasionally if i feel the comets got too much of the food. the stimulation the comets provide for my black moore is also a huge joy, he’s obsessed with them! certainly happy to report they are living together very happy and healthy.

What about Blackmore’s?

You should have also recommended black moors. They're pretty hardy too and not "as fancy" as ranchus, or say celestial eyes goldfish -- those are kind of gross-looking.

There is also a difference in keeping a designer breed and a common breed. Designer breeds tend to have more issues actually and need more requirements. They’re all carps at the end of the day.

I think Hibunas, Comets and Fantails are the best beginner variations when it comes to goldfish.
