At what point can the prong be removed?

People say prong is abuse… letting a dog pull, choke, and go nuts with a normal flat collar for god knows how long is abuse..

With a prong there will be a small timelapse of discomfort for the dog to be able to enjoy healthy walks for the rest of his/her life

Sometimes I need my dog to heel though. Which do you teach first - loose leash or heel?

You sound like you are from the States. Prong collars are absolutely illegal in the most developed European countries. They cause pain, and serious damage the lymph nodes, salivary glands, traquea etc. They are described as inhumane by the law for a reason. Maybe other techniques take longer, but there is no pain and bodily harm inflicted on our best and most devoted 4 legged friends. Food for thought.

How would you use a prong collar on an overactive but very timid and fearful dog? Without decapitation, of course.

This has made the most sense to me than any other video I've seen! The perceived positive reinforcement when getting to the intended target is so true!!

With that being said, I had a pittie for 15 years that was STRONG...he was about 68 lbs. A trainer here got me a prong collar and a thin paracord leash she made. I could walk him with one finger when he had the prong collar on. But he was smart, as soon as I put a leash on him wo the prong collar it was game on for him. I lost my pittie last summer. RIP my love..

Fast forward, I got lyme and developed some kind of allergy to dogs that only showed up w intradermal allergy test so I got a goldendoodle after falling in love w one my sis was dogsitting. I wanted a standard size. I had no clue they get to 100 lbs. My 9 mo old was 86 lbs on his 9 mo bday. And I'm waiting (and my vet agrees) to neuter him til he's fully developed. Idk if it's because I'm older, but at 9 mo old, my goldendoodle is so much stronger than I remember my pittie being. I've had laminectomies and last night he got excited when a truck full of kids stopped and pulled me to the ground. It's so painful. Other than that, we run, walk and play every day so I am pretty fit. But I have to do something because I sometimes just can't handle him.

I just ordered a front clip harness. And I am wondering if a shock collar will be better to train him and more permanent solution when he's not wearing it. I just know it wasn't a punishment that my pittie feared when he wasn't wearing the prong collar and with my puppy's hair, it would be a nightmare to use all the time.

Would a shock collar produce more permanent results or would it be the same thing, he'd only be good when it was on? That's so frustrating that they know when the threat (punishment) is imminent LOL. What are your thoughts on that?

No you don t handle a dog who don t know you like that .he just don t know you..wants to the owner...the handler..
why not get to know him first...engagment take 10 min...respect and trust ...than you don t need a pronge...soooo many country s can train whithout...and have good walking dogs.
I think you a good trainer...but never ever stop learning

What if you have a lot of time, and open space, and want to allow your dog to just do its thing; sniffing. Is that a bad thing in itself, or just a bad habit only in relation to a structured walk?

Sniffing is a normal thing for a dog to do. Aren't we supposed to take our time and allow them to stop and sniff around.? I understand that our dog must pay attention to us but so must we give them their freedom as well... right?

I’ve been having a huge battle of wills and an unenjoyable experience every time I walked my 9 month white shepherd until I watched this video and today did everything you said. It was amazing, worked like a charm. I was one who fought trying to walk her in a continuous heel and love what you said that heel walking is your pet peeve and that you believe in letting your dog be a dog while walking. I can’t thank you enough for your wisdom in this video, you are a superb trainer! And have restored my relationship ❤ with my puppy.
