Breeding, IVs, EVs, etc, are systems that don't need to be engaged with by the average player to enjoy the single player Pokemon experience. However, if you actually WANT to get into PvP, you literally can't do it with the tools and information in the game. None of the systems are explained, only vaguely hinted at, and are incredibly time-consuming, just to get on the same level as everybody else.

The issue with these systems is that they aren't only obtuse and unexplained, but entirely necessary to play the game at a competitive level. The quality of life changes slowly introduced in each modern generation demonstrate that GAMEFREAK wants to make the competitive scene more accessible, but they just need to go all the way and let you customise stats and moves freely
