True--composed in 1982. But when Ken Burns was creating his award-winning PBS series The Civil War (first shown in 1990), Mr. Burns became aware of Jay Ungar's (relatively recent at that time) fiddle piece and felt that it captured the essence of the feeling he wanted for a particular very emotional scene in the documentary. Mr. Burns obtained the rights to use Mr. Ungar's piece. It was so powerful and effective that ever since, many people have associated this tune with the Civil War.
ОтветитьOh, gosh. I just realized--were you responding to the person who said this piece was used for a Vietnam Vet? I'm so sorry I stuck my nose in, without first reading carefully. You're right. This piece wouldn't have been played for someone who died in Vietnam. Please forgive me for jumping to conclusions.
ОтветитьNice...
ОтветитьI saw and interview with Ken Burns (2010) where he stated that not a day goes by that he gets letters regarding the letter and the song. Burns said that some of them are so moving he almost becomes overwhelmed by it.
ОтветитьI must say I've listened to a number of versions of this beautiful piece and this is my favourite.
ОтветитьEarly the video you can see behind him on the wall. It's for HIV.

ОтветитьWhat a beautiful piece of music played by a professional.
ОтветитьSo beautiful, so wonderful, so sad. Such a great performance. Such an eloquent musical expression of the sadness of the Civil War.
ОтветитьI am compelled to return to this over and over again! Just too beautiful!!
ОтветитьTo Arthur: I realized, since the tune was written in the latter years of the 20th Century that it actually wasn't used in the Civil War. But, as Ken Burns imagined,
in using the tune in his Civil War TV series, it would have been excellent one to express the feelings of many during and after the Civil War.
Great performance, Greg. Ashokan Farewell became even more beautiful in your violin. You are amazing. Thanks for sharing your talent.
ОтветитьA 20th Century composition by a man channeling 19th Century America. Remarkable.
ОтветитьBeautiful version
ОтветитьWOW! One of the very best versions of this beautiful composition I've heard.
ОтветитьI am recalling Paganini's hands.
ОтветитьWe humans are capable of creating such beauty as Greg Scott so wonderfully performs "Ashokan farewell" .....Hard to believe it was also a human that perpetrated the horror to initiate the vigil.
ОтветитьOn behalf of my entire family that has gone to our maker before me that have faught in every war the US has had, I thank you for posting this beautiful song...It always makes me cry, and this is one of the best versions I have ever heard. The spirit of all the soldiers that have left us seem to linger when this song is played. I have a family that came to the US and landed in Jamestown from England. My heart seems to hear them around me whenever I hear this song. Thank you so much for posting it
