Deadly Fungus Candida Auris Spreading Rapidly: CDC

Fungal infections are an increasingly serious threat to public health, with the rise of antibiotic resistant organisms driving global epidemic outbreaks of disease. Candida auris is one of the most deadly of these infections, with a mortality rate of 30-60%. As the name implies, Candida auris is a yeast infection that affects the respiratory, digestive, and urinary systems of both humans and animals, and it is especially dangerous among individuals with compromised immune systems due to chemotherapy, HIV, or other treatments.

The CDC recently released a new report on the rising prevalence of Candida auris in both the U.S. and Europe, as well as other areas of the world. According to the report, the infection has already been identified in 12 states across the United States and has gone global, with cases found in more than 50 countries. The most susceptible populations are critical care patients, those with weakened immune systems, and those undergoing treatment for cancer or other medical conditions.

• Use environmental cleaning and disinfection procedures known to be effective against C. auris.

It is also critical to practice basic hygiene such as washing your hands often, especially before and after meals, and avoid cross contamination of food and utensils.
