Living in Slovenia as an American | Culture Shocks & Daily Life in Ljubljana 🇸🇮
What’s it like being an American living in Slovenia? In this video, I share my experiences of adjusting to life in Ljubljana, Slovenia—from cultural differences to my favorite things about living here! From Slovenian traditions to nature, food, and daily habits, I’ll break down what makes this country so unique.
🚶♂️ Life in Slovenia: Cultural Differences & Adjustments
1️⃣ Dining Out in Slovenia 🍽️
One of the first things I noticed? Servers don’t check in as often! Unlike in the U.S., where waiters stop by frequently, here in Slovenia, you’re given space to enjoy your meal. And when you’re done? You get up and pay when you’re ready—no waiting for the bill!
2️⃣ Walking & Biking Are a Way of Life 🚲
In the U.S., walking and biking can be risky, but Slovenia truly prioritizes pedestrians. Here’s what I love:
✅ Cars always stop for pedestrians trying to cross the street
✅ Walkers & bikers own the road—Ljubljana is super bike-friendly
✅ Even crosswalk lights are different! Unlike the U.S., Slovenian crosswalks have countdown timers for red and green lights
3️⃣ Getting Around Without a Car 🚌
I was used to driving everywhere in the U.S., but in Slovenia, I had to learn bus schedules, train routes, and even how to navigate by bike or foot. Now, I love how easy it is to get around without a car!
🛒 Daily Life in Slovenia: What’s Different?
4️⃣ Everything Closes on Sundays
This was a huge adjustment! Sundays are for rest and family time, so most stores are closed. I quickly learned to stock up on groceries on Saturday—no last-minute supermarket runs here!
5️⃣ Church & Mass Are a Bit Different ⛪
A few cultural differences stood out to me:
✔️ The priest exits to the side rather than greeting everyone at the end of mass
✔️ Confessions happen during mass, which I never saw in the U.S.
6️⃣ The University Social Scene 🎓
Student life in Slovenia is very different from what I was used to in the U.S.! There’s less of a fraternity/sorority culture and more of a tight-knit community vibe among students.
7️⃣ Waiting in Line is More Relaxed
In the U.S., if you leave a line, you lose your spot. In Slovenia? It’s more flexible. At a government office, I put my name down, and they told me to come back in three hours—so I went for a coffee!
👨👩👧👦 Family & Everyday Life in Slovenia
8️⃣ Kids Have More Freedom in the City 🏫
I love seeing children walking through Ljubljana’s city center in groups with their teachers. In the U.S., kids usually stay inside school all day due to safety concerns, but here, short field trips are common!
In Slovenia, shoes come off at the door! Most homes have slippers waiting for guests—a small but interesting cultural difference.
🔟 Gym Culture & Two Pairs of Shoes 🏋️
Slovenians bring two pairs of shoes to the gym—one for outside and one for training. In the U.S., we just wear the same shoes inside and outside. It took me a while to get used to this!
🇸🇮 Daily Habits & Small Adjustments
✔️ Coffee Culture ☕ – I make my coffee differently now, embracing the strong espresso culture of Slovenia
✔️ Trash Sorting ♻️ – Slovenia has a very strict and organized waste system!
✔️ Pancakes Are Different 🥞 – Forget thick, fluffy American pancakes—here, they’re thin like crepes
✔️ Towels Are Smaller 🛁 – I was surprised that bath towels are much smaller than what I was used to in the U.S.!
🌿 Why I LOVE Living in Slovenia
Slovenia isn’t just about cultural differences—it’s one of the most beautiful and sustainable countries in the world. I love:
✅ The breathtaking nature – mountains, lakes, and forests everywhere
✅ The slower pace of life – people here truly take time to enjoy life
✅ The community-oriented culture – Sundays with family, coffee breaks with friends, and respect for traditions.
