Cleveland EMT attacked while transporting patient

A Cleveland emergency medical technician is recovering after authorities say he was attacked by a patient he and his colleagues were attempting to help early Tuesday morning.

Cleveland Fire Squad 41 responded to a report of an assault near East 116th Street and Shaker Boulevard just after 3 a.m., and found a bloodied and injured man at the scene. The medical team decided to take the patient by ambulance to University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center when, according to Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association President Andrew Gasiewski, "the male became agitated (and) ended up assaulting the actual EMT."

Dave Jockers, first vice president of the Cleveland Association of Rescue Employees, told 3News his coworker was punched in the head several times.

"There was a little bit of the tangle and the paramedic had to subdue him," Jockers said. "The driver recognized it and called in 'officer in distress.'"

The ambulance driver pulled over and radioed in a "1078" to dispatch. This, Jockers says, means "all hands on deck. ... Anybody that's available will respond."

Multiple EMS units showed up, along with Cleveland police. They assisted Unit 41, eventually tying down the patient with soft restraints.
