Thanks for watching and we can't wait to share more of our build and adventures with you. This video is not sponsored these are the products Ginny decided was best for our build and budget.
Our van is a VW Crafter Long Wheel Base LWB 4 Motion (4x4/AWD) Van. If you have any questions drop me a comment or dm me!
In this video we get our water system for our camper van conversion installed in the van. This includes plumbing the water tank, water pump, water filter, expansion tank and hot water system (bobil hybrid water heater) in. We use 12mm John Guest push fit pipes in red and blue to connect the components togther and run a hot and cold feed to the shower room and kitchen area of the van. I show you what tools we used. I also show you how we wired up the bobil hybrid water heater system.
Installing the water system in my van build has been one of the more intimidating tasks, second only to the electrics. Water is essential, but leaks can be disastrous, so I approached this step carefully. The goal for this stage was to fully plumb the system to the kitchen sink, the shower, and an outdoor shower at the back.
I had already installed the Bobil boiler—a hybrid system that heats water via a diesel heater, 240V, or 12V power—and a diesel heater in a custom box. The plan was to connect all the pipework and get the system functional.
To start, I built a small cupboard to protect the boiler’s outlet pipe from accidental knocks and provide a mounting point for a shower fitting. I used lightweight materials throughout to avoid unnecessary weight. For the plumbing, I chose John Guest 12mm fittings and used color-coded red and blue pipes for hot and cold water. I mounted components like the pump, filter, and expansion tank onto a board before securing them in the van.
During the process, I used proper pipe cutters for clean, square cuts and PTFE tape on threaded fittings to prevent leaks. I learned that many leaks happen because fittings aren’t pushed in far enough, so I double-checked all connections.
I ran the pipework from the water tank to the pump, through the filter, and into the expansion tank. I also routed cold water pipes to the kitchen and shower areas and connected hot water lines from the boiler. Installing a thermostatic mixer was a priority to regulate water temperature, especially with kids in the van.
For drainage, I drilled through the van floor and sealed the holes with anti-rust primer and sealant. I planned to test everything for leaks once all components were connected. While I didn’t finish the entire system due to missing a part, I made significant progress.
This project has been a mix of challenges and learning moments, but I’m excited to see the system come together!
