Why are comments on … what is the deep state up to … probably a trap ?

I remember seeing a map of Australia at my son’s camp which involved learning about Indigenous people. I never knew about all the Aboriginal territories. This was not taught at school. I cried and felt cheated by the education system. I can’t imagine how cheated and angry the Indigenous people feel. Murderers and thieves colonised Australia.

Thank you for this disturbing piece. History is never history, it is told in service of dominant narratives designed to wake us out of the nightmare of the truth so we can keep on sleeping, while looking like our eyes are open. This is our inheritance, which is not just the horrors of what happened and continues to happen to our First Nations brothers and sisters, but the way in which it continues to be concealed.

Not surprised. Typical behavior of European setllers in every continent they set their foot on.

Unbelievable that the Premier of Victoria did not know about the massacres - in New Zealand, we know massacres happened in Australia, in all the states and territories and are very well aware of the stolen generations and missions, the assimilation policies and the intent to wipe out the Aboriginal peoples, the intent of the White Australia policy. Considering movies like Rabbit Proof Fence are well over 20 years old, to not know these stories in this day and age is unacceptable.

We didn't know because we weren't taught it. We were told captain Cook discovered Australia. I was 38 before I learnt the truth, told to me by Aboriginal elders, at a workshop l attended for work. I always believed the education department's goal was not to teach us how to think but rather what to think. To indoctrinate us with lies. Not until I met the elders did i understand how right I was. The absolute tragedy is that the persecution of Aboriginals is still going today, just more subtly, but no less damaging. Future generations deserve to be told the truth. It's our only hope for permanent positive change.

Keeping secrets is bad for everyone, it maintains the pain and suffering. Truth telling maybe painful at first but it is necessary, it provides a means to move beyond the pain and suffering. Deep listening is healing for the truth teller and the listener. It can release grief and shame and offer reconciliation within oneself and between others.

About time …..we need more of this. I have made a point of trying to understand what happened. There are so many books on this, there is no excuse not to know. We cannot move forward as a strong independent and mature country unless we really engage and understand what happened here. We need to make reparations and really be sorry 🙏🏽🙏🏽

It's the same story in every one of Britain's former colonies that still exists as independent nations today. They should be liable for any reparations for atrocities committed before the Federation of Australia.

If we're going to be honest and engage in the truth telling process in good faith, shouldn't we call what was done to first nations people by its name, without reservation?🤔
I'm not convinced we are ready to do that, regardless of how long overdue it is. We love our myths, and the bliss of ignorance too much.

Truth telling now! Shame on the federal government. You can't change the past but at the bare minimum you could acknowledge it. The past is crucial for understanding the problems we face today and you cannot fix those problems without understanding what caused it.

I'm Polish, I descend from one survivor after our family was wiped from history from East and West where we were no longer a country. Thanks to my Babcia, I can relate somewhat to the struggle to survive and keep our culture alive. The only thing that has helped is more people and more established in 'formal' records, unlike the more oral and story telling traditions of your people. With shared passion for recognition, respect and regards 🇵🇱🤝🖤💛❤ (why is there no aboriginal/first nations flag available? That needs to change.). We can only be one when the foundation is truth and there is a semblance of justice for the lives of those before. E.g. replacing colonial monuments with educative memorials. We are their voices now.

It's time to reconsider our nation's foundational elements. The monarchy, calendar, and flag are all symbols of a problematic past. It's essential to acknowledge the harm caused by these institutions and to work towards a more enlightened and equitable future, rather than allowing outdated ideologies to persist and manipulate public perception.
