And I guess someone should say this, so I'll be the devil's advocate regarding Charlottesville. That protest began because of the plan to tear down the statue of Robert E. Lee. There are many good and decent people who value the historical heritage of their region and of their ancestors for many generations. To them, tearing down a monument is like burning books. For others it's just a matter of personal nostalgia, a statue they have seen their whole lives -- maybe had a picnic near it with their first girl friend. So for them it's like the disappearance of drive-in theaters, and has no basis in bigotry at all.

Unfortunately, lots of true racists and fascists -- the worst kinds of folks -- jumped in. And face it, there were antagonists from the liberal side when the racists and fascists showed up. So confrontations ensued. Trump naively thought he might quell the animosities by trying to appease both sides. After all, he did make it clear that some of these racist protesters were criminals and thugs, and he unequivocally condemned the car attack, but those parts of his speeches didn't get much coverage from a media committed to spinning everything he does in the most negative way. So I think the media and other critics have been ruthlessly unfair about this. Never presume malice where ignorance, (or in this case, naivete), is an equally likely explanation.
