Apple might integrate and in-house generative AI with integrated AI logic in the neural hardware.
What gets interesting about whether Apple deploys their own chips for their own data centers... is it worth it? Maybe if they can also sell those chips to others, to help offset all the R&D costs? By the time they outfitted a large data center with their own chips, they would be somewhat outdated? I suppose an interesting question is: what do Google and others do with their previous generations of custom chips? (sell them? crush them?). What you are talking about here is not just a new generation of Apple Xserve (which was just off the shelf Intel Xeon), but something truly custom. Unless.. they're just going to tie together lots of M4 Ultras.... But as far as some chip beyond Mx series, am wondering if they would sell them (and compete with NVidia in that space). Am sure you are thinking of a followup video along these lines ;)

What kind of researches , must they pursue. They must use software for designing, correct? So where does the cost and challenges come from?

Apple has the Elon Musk type of innovation for phones. The only other os manufacturer that can compare is Samsung.
Overall, apple seems to be thinking long-term. Probably the best reason why they've seemed so static these last few years.
I think they will quickly reestablish their dominace in a year or two.

ОтветитьThis might not be relevant, but when can media companies begin to serve ads not just according to location but user language preferences? Without the user having to set up the preferences. Google allows us for example to reject ads and give reasons, but does not give the option of “wrong language” as a reason (in my experience).

ОтветитьSounds like shes trying to cover up Apple's rear! Failed Apple car n delayed AI functions. No innovations for so many years. Yes, Apple might still have an upper hand on the chips over Huawei n sanctions, but these wont help much in the long run. Compete fairly? Apple would have lost long ago.
ОтветитьApple's silicon uses less power and also has less teraflops. One M2 Ultra is far less than a full Grace Hopper GPU, but the equivalent would be something like several dozen M2 Ultras vs. 1 GH. Also, Apple's silicon has to have GPU clocks well above 2.6 GHz to be competitive, but they are at 1.4 GHz for the M4 -- they have to figure this out in order to be competitive.

ОтветитьInteresting if they’re using Ultra chips. You don’t need nearly as much compute for inference vs training, and the big load in delivering AI to their users is going to be inference. Also, power and power density is becoming an increasing problem in datacenter design. Large numbers of very low-power chips might give better packing density in terms of net inferences per second per cubic volume, and more inference per watt-hour than faster systems.
Memory access strikes me as the biggest issue with running inference, but if you can fit the problem into the 128GB of the largest ultra configuration, the M2 Ultra’s internal memory bandwidth is very very high. There’s not remotely as much dedicated “neural” hardware in the Ultras as even a small, much earlier generation NVidia chip, but if you intelligently manage the task assignment, there’s a lot of inference processing that could be done on an Ultra vs on the latest iPhones themselves.
If you look at it, using Ultras in special-purpose datacenters could make a ton of sense: Cheap hardware with low power requirements that’s still one or two orders of magnitude more powerful than the on-device inference engines. Run small but capable models there, and then hand off the really demanding stuff to OpenAI’s servers and advanced models like o1 Mini or even o1.
The vast majority of end-consumer edge requirements will be able to be handled efficiently by a combo of on-device compute and Ultra-based datacenters. Purchase the small percentage of remaining needed capacity from OpenAI at wholesale.
Bottom line, this sounds like a very smart and well thought-out move by Apple, I predict great success at scale. Give them a year and they’re going to blow Samsung et al out of the water.

ОтветитьQualcomm has piles of patents in wireless technology, accumulated in over 25 years. I bet Apple's 5G "technical" problems are actually to avoiding using Qualcomm's IP.
ОтветитьAn economy shouldn't be like that, you have to share profits with other companies for them to grow too. Buying companies and forcing them to concentrate to only make for you is also inefficient. But apple in the short to medium term is expected to have more profits.
ОтветитьHate to tell you but Apple has been involved with making silicon a lot longer than the iPhone. The Motorola processors Apple used before Intel. Motorola worked with Apple and IBM to design and manufacturing of those processors.

They make it impossible to expand the Internal memory of most of their stuff. & double the price if you want an extra ( TB ).

ОтветитьOk me as gaming enthusiast, so if Apple wants and needs to design a more performance hungry chip for cloud computing and Teraflops of output they will basically also design the first ever pure in house Apple "GPU" chip? if this does happen then we will have another competitor to Nvidia and AMD or even Sony and Microsoft (console gaming) in the near future? Also you stated that it will cost hundreds of billions of dollars to do so. But how did Tesla manage to design their own cloud computing in house chips? didn't they do it for much cheaper as they don't have anything close to the budget and wealth compared to Apple?
