I’ve seen it happen many times, the worst case being B of A in the 80’s. A.W. Claussen was CEO, and made many billions of loans to Brazil… so many he was tapped to run the World Bank, and help develop the ‘third world’ (as the ‘global south’ was referred to in those days). His second in command became CEO and all those loans to Brazil, and more to other South American countries started defaulting. They got cleaned up over a 4 or 5 year period at a cost of a lot of profits… They fired that CEO, and as Claussen retired from the World Bank, he got the job again!
