I want to upgrade my 1660 to 2070super but for that I would need to upgrade my cpu to not bottleneck it, but to upgrade my cpu I would need a different socket motherboard and I also would need to upgrade my psu too so im just building a new one when I have the money to do so

Did this for my wife's computer. Went from a 1600x and a 1050 to and 5800x and 7600xt slapped in 2 ssds one for games one for OS (still need to clone her OS over) and now she's playing wilds no problem cost less than 500 bucks

you realize that at this point you are buying NEW:
-RAM
-CPU
-GPU
-PSU

That's practically almost everything essential for a PC, you might as well just get a new MOBO at that point and a new case and either transfer your old cooler or get a new one too. That's a whole new PC.

I had an ancient pc with an i5-4460 and 8gb ddr3 ram. No gpu. I recently got a new computer, an ibuypower y40(Hyte y40 case) with a 4060ti 16gb, an i7-14700f and ddr5 32gb. Huge jump.

That's more or less my build but a bit more powerful/modern and I opted for an entirely new build. Of course I'm still waiting for said new build because Nvidia are a bunch of assholes and there's still no 5080's a month after launch, at this point I might just try and grab a 9070 XT instead and go full AMD with my 9800X3D.

the problem is investing in older hardware (am4 board) is a waste when building a more up-to-date pc from scratch is just a little pricier

I would just buy a new ram kit entirely. Trying to match the same ram with the one you bought can be tricky and for whatever reason might not work

Sounds like a great way to fry a motherboard. The vrm's and capacitors aren't rated on all boards equally. I know cause I rock an msi b450m2 max. It can support up to a 3600x but anything newer than that and you're gonna cook your components. Blind wild advice is best taken with capital R Research and actual thought before tanking a perfectly good motherboard because some guy said you could on the internet. Be careful and good luck building. And read the damn manual.

I've slowly been upgrading my pc recently.. I currently have a ryzen 7 3800x and gtx 1070 with 32gb of ddr4 running at 3600mhz. I upgraded from an intel i5-6500 so I'm happy with the 3800x, especially for $75. I know it's still kinda outdated, but honestly it runs way better regardless. That 6500 was starting to not even load browsers. Anyway, next upgrade is gonna be my GPU, I've been thinking about getting a 7800xt or 7700. Maybee a 4070 if prices go down a little, but I've mostly been looking at the used market honestly.
