Hard torque is when the motor is locked up and whatever you're drilling or driving isn't moving like when the head of a lag lands. Soft torque is while it's still working like in the middle of driving a lag. It's a strange property of motors because the max power they can deliver limits the torque while it's moving.

Love the metabo line I just wish the impact driver was a little sexier. The wrench you guys reviewed was awesome, the grinders are the Benz of metal work and the drills are fantastic. Just now match all that stuff with a beautiful brushless impact and I might have to start justifying rediculous purchases to my wife.

Since they couldn't find a price - online for $149 with 2 2.0 batteries.. Killer at that price if you don't have a BS 18 LTX Quick already.

So new marketing idea is to really advertise 18 volt? With just about all batt operated tools, it's all about the batteries swapping and longevity.

Hard versus soft torque is a pretty interesting topic! Hard torque is the maximum instantaneous torque, basically spinning the drill at maximum speed and testing how much torque it can produce at any given time. Soft torque is the amount of torque that can be generated continuously under load. That is why the soft torque value is a lot lower than the hard torque. Its easy to spin the drill up to full speed and get a lot of torque for one quick burst, but generating it over a period of time while under load is much more demanding. Most manufacturers will advertise their hard torque numbers which look great on paper, but tell nothing about how their drills/drivers operate under full load. A good example of this is driving a large lag screw into wood, since the torque needed to drive the screw is constantly putting the drill under load. Compare that to something like a self-tapping screw where it is primarily speed dependent, moreso than torque.

The nose piece coming off is pretty slick. Does seem down there as far as torque numbers go, but it does seem an ok trade off for it being so compact.

I have to agree that I prefer smaller drills for my go to unless I really need the power. My m12 fuel impact driver is like an extension of my hand. small light and powerful. I can see why Eric likes the compact Metabo. But if you can get the same power from a 12v, why carry around the bigger battery? I suppose it gives you the nice small drill without having to go to another battery platform.

Nice review, hey Dan I know the grip size is important to you, that's why you prefer the Dewalt grips. How does this compare to the Dewalt and even the super comfortable Makita LXT grips. It looks thicker than the Dewalt and Makita, keep up the great reviews.

The BS 18 Quick belongs to the entry level line made in their Chinese factory. The German-made BS 18 LT BL Q (brushless) is a lot stronger but also very compact and almost as light. Yet more expensive of course.
