A food crisis, but you aren’t farming food other than some chickens. I could have chickens in my backyard in the city if I wanted to. Don’t need a farm to do that.

I am not sure what you mean by school taxes? I have only heard of property taxes. Is this because you live on agricultural land? Confused about how property taxes cost or work, if you could explain. I am finding that the cost of yearly property taxes really dictates where I can afford to live. I am from NJ with a 25 yr old son who is rooted here. I would love to go to NY and not have to go far away from him.

i would be happy with even 1 acre of land and a small building to live in and start growing food, fruit trees, working with the land etc. but here in the netherlands getting land is (i dont wanna say impossible) but.. impossible. unless somehow im gonna get rich from my 5k in crypto right now hahaha... tbh i wish i was an amarican citizen, there is so much more land. I’m a 30 year old guy with very little going for me from an education/qualification/professional standpoint, and this makes me hopeful. My life has been hard. Have been screwed over from a both an educational & professional standpoint in many different ways, some of which on-paper. Genuinely a surprise that I made it this long. Yes!! Financial Transparency. Im a creative hardworking kid from a hardscrabble background and largely ignorant to whats possible. I am paying $5200/mo in rent, and in a rat race, and never thoght I could do these things. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE EDUCATION AND INSPIRATION

Housing prices have gone though the roof.

I just built a barn in 2024, and the concrete (30 x 80) alone was like $20,000, and that did not include in floor heat. So the operating costs may be low, but building today is NOT CHEAP!

Loved what you said about resourcefulness of rural folk. One winter in upstate NY, I slid into a snow-patch and was spinning my tires. Instead of calling a tow, I called a friend, who happened to have a friend who lived right down the street from where I was. Within an hour, I was pulled out of there no problem. In the mean time, the lady whose house I got snuck near, invited me in for tea and pastries. Like you said, there's no way of accounting for all the money and time you will SAVE because people are so nice and helpful out there.
