I'm amazed at the skill you have at sharpening, reminds me of Japanese sword making and how your eye for it makes it an art as much as a skill. Thanks for sharing.
ОтветитьDang. That was awesome.
ОтветитьDang. That was awesome.
Ответитьanytime you can watch a skilled artisan it's a pleasure...
Ответитьim amazed, you just tapped the tool rest and set it perfect
ОтветитьYeah, I suck at sharpening mine.
ОтветитьThe US Navy used to have big heavy tool steel scrapers similar to that. They were similar in shape on one side (flat side) and they had kind of a 5/8" tit on the other to get in between ship lap boards and remove paint. I would get those surplus, in bulk and I must have thrown away dozens of them. The dates on the packages were all 1945 or earlier. The steel quality varied wildly.
ОтветитьThat's just like ice skates
ОтветитьJust saw this in one of my woodturning forums. Since I use scrapers on my bowls all the time, I have a few 'outside the box' comments. One, you can hand burnish a burr on high speed steel, and it doesn't take much effort. I was doing that before I was told that you can't do it. Two is CBN grinding wheels. These are fairly new to the woodworking world, and are made for grinding hardened steel. Anything that is softer than bench chisels doesn't work well. You can search them up on You Tube. They come in grits 80, 180, 320, 600, and 1,000. For a very fine burr, the fine grits save honing. Finally, there is a big difference in the burr on the top side of the metal where the wheel is grinding down into the steel, and on the bottom side where the wheel is dragging off the bottom side.
Ответитьthank you
ОтветитьThanks Al. This seems like a must-have tool..Question. In the video, you say to keep it perpendicular to the work, but near the end when youre scraping the spruce, you tilt it at an angle.. Is that because spruce is so soft that it wont take away the burr?
ОтветитьIt’s basically a hockey skate
ОтветитьI'd think there'd be some 'canceling out' effect, so that only the BOTTOM side (leaving the grinding wheel) would have the protruding burr ; flipping it would of course grind the burr down, so again, you'd only have much burr on the bottom side?
Ответитьbefore these were available we had to make our own. My grandfather made scrapers for violin making from an old file.
ОтветитьDoes the diameter of the grinding wheel come into play in sharpening this scraper? What is the brand and size of the one you're using, Al? Also what is the grit for best results? Thanks!
ОтветитьExcellent! Dont need to ask any stupid questions just watch and listen. Great vid !
