WLP001 vs. US-05 Dry Yeast Comparison - Brew Dudes

John brewed up one batch of American Pale Ale with Cascade, split the batch in two and did an experiment to compare Fermentis SafAle US-05 with the new dry yeast version of White Labs WLP001!

Somewhat surprisingly, the two beers were noticeably different in aroma and flavor. The aroma on the US-05 beer was a little more creamy and malt forward while the WLP001 had more of what seemed like and ester note. In retrospect, that could also have been hop fruitiness coming through with muted malt aroma.

The beers attenuated the same way but the US-05 seemed a bit sweeter and richer in malt character.

In the end, they both made great beers. Perhaps if I was make something delicate like a blond ale, cream ale or any "lawnmower" style ale, I'd need to think twice between the two. If I was brewing something with a ton of malt character and/or hop character like a DIPA or strong West Coast IPA, we thought that the differences might get tough to pick out.
