Atlas isn't that weir of a name. Or maybe I'm just biased because I know a few trans dudes with the name
ОтветитьOh lord you’re not too old to use the term “shipping”! It dates back to the old usenet days of the internet to distinguish those that thought Mulder and Scully of The X-Files should be in a relationship (aka shippers). And I’M definitely not old, so…. 😂
ОтветитьI love the discussion of a default parent. My mother raised all four daughters as the default parent as if that was the norm. There’s a great episode of the handmaid’s tale that I think comments on this in a interesting way. It’s in season 4. It flashes back between June being afraid Luke (her husband) will leave her if she can’t get pregnant and the present where she feels guilt to return to freedom with Luke without Hannah (their daughter) because that’s her responsibility when Luke had been living in Canada free for years at that point. It’s something that really needs to be discussed more. It’s so normalized and I hate that Colleen Hoover is doing that more. If a woman makes one mistake or just does anything for herself she’s a bad mom. If a man does the bare minimum he’s parent of the year.
ОтветитьThis was the absolute most miserable thing to listen to. If you don’t like the characters, or the story, don’t read the second book?? I couldn’t finish this review because you nitpicked literally every single detail. Even down to hating the way babies smell. Miserable cynical person.
I am an adult that enjoyed the book. This story was told wonderfully, realistically and had a happy ending that was needed.
As someone who has experienced an abusive relationship, i think she wrote the story well. This was a very upsetting video to try and watch.
Ответить20 minutes in and I love your detailed critical analysis of the novel so far. Going beyond the DV and tackling all the other pressures a woman faces in a heterosexual relationship (including being the actual parent in most cases) that only compound the pressure and pain that a DV situation puts her in was a very necessary detail to being to the discussion. I feel like the people who like this book either are happy with superficial, flat characters with weird names and stock responses, or don't put in the effort to actually analyze the novel which is a pity. Also, the thing about the smell of milk- I havent been around babies since I was a preteen (thank goodness), but I detest the smell of milk as well. And the taste of raw milk. Ugh. Makes me nauseous.
ОтветитьThe mother isn't just the default parent, in many cases they are the default adult. They keep track of everyones schedule, they know if anything needs to be bought like groceries and household items, they keep track of how long it's been since medical appointments ect. It seems exhausting.
ОтветитьI really hate when mothers portray motherhood as disgusting and awful ALL the time. There are some gross parts and hard parts when your kids are babies. Yes, definitely. But then, you understand how to be a parent more and more (theoretically) and also, your kids get older. They use the toilet on their own. They get themselves their own food or can play alone sometimes. Like, the baby stage can be really hard. But then they grow up, right. And it gets a little easier and you get more time back and you get to know them and understand who they are. I'm not like trying to convince anyone to have kids. I'm just saying why I hate when mothers write how horrible being a mother is. There's a lot of hard parts but there's so much good. And in my opinion, it gets better and better.
ОтветитьBooktok makes me think I could become a best selling author too (wish me luck, im trying to write a fantasy romance that isn’t all tropes and creepy)
ОтветитьStepped away for a second and came back and heard "bumhole".
Ответитьon my school bus i overheard two girls (both around 14 or 15) discussing It Ends With Us and how emotional it made them. they even asked one of our teachers on the bus with us if she had seen the movie and they all had a very weird bonding experience over all liking the movie. honestly terrifying because its these types of books that make young girls not realise what abuse actually looks like and could lead to very scary scenarios that id rather not think about :(
Ответитьthis really makes me think i need to just write, who cares how good it is
ОтветитьI can’t believe the writer has a neurosurgeon asking if his child can have fries!!
Also, he was a Resident not an attest. They are required to work long hours so spending two days a week isn’t bad considering he still isn’t finished with medical school
CoHo: making the straights less okay since 2012
ОтветитьOnly Trishy can call me her Fishie.
ОтветитьYour blouse is so cute , 70s vibes ❤❤
ОтветитьRyle, neurosurgeon...doesn't know what his baby can/can't eat..cool cool cool
ОтветитьWow, even after watching your whole review and hearing how poor the writing is, I’m still shocked at how bad the last line is 😂
This was an awesome video, thanks Rachel! I’ve not read either of the books but was curious after watching the film last week and hating it.
Also loved the comparison to Jacqueline Wilson! I was a huge fan of her books as a kid but haven’t revisited them as an adult and damn that’s some good writing. I’m pretty sure I remember the part in The Worry Website where the child describes abuse in her home ends with her typing in “I think I’m getting spots”. Colleen Hoover could never.
Define serious relationships he asks? When he already had one that was a year long and where they lived together?
ОтветитьYour Shirt Is So Dope.😭
🖤💗💜🧡💛🩵💛🧡💜💗🖤
I know they dont have window screens in europe normally, but i thought people would at least know what it is 😂
ОтветитьThe milky baby smell making you sick is honestly so relatable. I also have sensory issues and having a hightened sense of smell is one of them. The stale, milky saliva smell babies have nauseates me.
ОтветитьI can’t believe I'm defending Colleen Hoover, but since you return to this point several times, I just need to point out that it's made clear in the first book that Atlas and Lily didn't start having * until Lily was 16. It's an actual plot point that they wait until the age of consent in Maine.
It's perfectly fine to hate the book for a whole bunch of other reasons though.
It wud be fun to read if she explored why Atlas can't connect with anyone else other than tweens, the girl he met when he was a teen, and have no real friends because probably he is too scared to have attachment with adults other than lily
ОтветитьThe writing feels like Coleen is a pantser who doesn’t like to go back and do revisions :/
ОтветитьI have never felt more understood than when you described your reaction to babies having food on their face. I feel sick just typing it out.
Ответить"It is my wish, for you to be my fish"
Me: (a romantic) .....yeeeeeah i am going to ask for a divorce.
Just saying ...in the U.S. abusers usually get some sort of visitation/custody of children.
ОтветитьI know it would hurt me but I kinda want Rachel to do a video on A Little Life.
ОтветитьCrazy book, great shirt ✨
ОтветитьI’m so sorry babe but a 15/16 year old & a 18/19 year old is just not even a thing to me. Especially if they’re both in high school.
I’ve seen stuff that’s actually problematic, and Lily x Atlas just doesn’t fit the predatory dynamic you’re describing…
I grew up in California though, and we have Romeo & Juliet laws.
oh my god nothing happened in this book???? 😭😭😭
Ответитьthe way you say "stupid" makes my brain so happy ^^
Ответитьthat LAST LINE HOLY SHIT
the scream I scrumpt
good christ that is BAD
The comparison of scenes from CoHo's books vs other works was really well done by you, Rachel. When I listen to CoHo's depictions of abuse, I feel nothing; I can just take it in like a newspaper article. Meanwhile that other scene you read evoked a visceral sensation of fear and dread in me. Thank you for showing the difference, that's very helpful for all writers watching :)
(My wording is not the best right now, I am a little shaken)
there have been some very minor gay characters, usually the unimportant friends of the woman mc, but this is the most important one so uh, yeah
ОтветитьI think she was 16, not 15 when they finally slept together, so it might not have been statutory, but it was certainly not okay
ОтветитьSomething interesting to point out that the manga series Josh says is his favourite is Chainsaw Man. It’s a series centres around a teenage boy who was groomed by an older woman, something that is not romanticized in the text at all. It’s funny because Colleen Hoover’s whole thing is romanticizing abusive dynamics and that’s one of the series she decided to name. I’m willing to bet a ton she just googled top 10 manga series and picked the two at the top of the list. If she actually has read the series, I would be horrified to hear her takes on the main character 💀
ОтветитьI'm very lucky that my husband could and did step up when our daughter was born 5 months ago. Between PPD, studying and autistic overwhelm I was not coping. That some fathers consider looking after their own children babysitting and think that conceiving a child means a person will magically know everything drives me crazy. I already disliked a lot of the messages portrayed in Colleen Hoover's books but this hit particularly close to home.
ОтветитьThere is something really genuine and sweet about you. It makes these very heavy and triggering topics easier to digest.
ОтветитьThank you for defending victims.
ОтветитьI seen a few kids named Atlas. One of them had siblings named after other Greek gods.
ОтветитьFun fact I've looked into further since filming: It Ends With Us was released in 2016, Justin Baldoni started trying to get it made into a film in 2019, in January 2023 casting started for the film, in July 2023 It Starts With Us was released. So Colleen clearly just promoted Justin's book in here because he was directing the film of her book. It makes sense but it's pretty funny.
