This video sure brings back memories. I attended this air show several times back then. It was a great combination of scale and full-scale with some truly talented pilots. I was awestruck when an F-14 flew on a knife-edge flight path and retracted its wings. I witnessed the B-29 fly several times, saw it crash once and saw the rebuilt plane crash again a few years later; likely its last flight ever. My only regret was passing on a chance to meet the Enola Gay crew one year. Thanks, Byron!

7:20 - Those Zeros are actually T-6's that were converted into replica 'A6M' Zeros by NA Texan. Bonus points for anyone who names the movie they were purchased/built for.

Really didn't think you would respond! You seem to be a very busy guy! Watch all your videos! Sure wish I had someone around like you to learn things from! You are a really great pilot! Enjoy everything you do! Have learned alot from your videos! Only in the hobby about a year! Just love helicopters! Happy flying!

Dave, thanks for sharing this. My late father would make the trek up to Ida Grove every year. We had a lot of fun and made several magazines with our clubs planes. The Fokker Tri wing at 3:28 was built and flown by Rich Kuening of the Lincoln Sky Knights and Don Neil would bring up his Thompson Trophy planes. Don built several of the model planes for the Rocketeer movie. Once agian thanks G

Its interesting that the following years the striking back show was about the battle for Iwo Jima instead of Pearl Harbor. At the end to these shows members of the marine force that fought on Iwo put up a flag with the Star Spangled Banner playing on a hill behind the set that looked like Mount Saribachi (sp). The show evolved with additional aircraft and pyrotechnics. In
addition to the large B-29 Byron also produced a large B-17 that he flew at the show while the announcer read poem written about the B-17 by a B-17 crew member. The poem was written after the Boeing reunion for the B-17 crews and aircraft builders at their headquarters in Seattle, Wa. Got to attend the show several times and twice at Ankeny, Ia before the show was closed forever. Best model airplane fly-in, exibition, full scale air show, professional model pilot demonstrations, and static display of the Conservative Air force war birds. The people of Ida Grove were incredible hosts and a top notch venue.
My son and I have many videos and memories of our trips there.

Proud to be the great-grandson of Byron. Unfortunately, he passed away while I was young, however, tons of the relics have been kept from the days of the show. One of my favorite things to do when I'm back home is go and look at everything again. Appreciate you very much for posting this.
