Let’s spill the tea—when a team’s at loggerheads and not performing, it’s not the software, it’s not the clients. It’s the lack of TRUST.

A lack of trust will ultimately lead to a toxic work environment, where you spend more time trying to fix team dynamics, than actually getting on with other work.

People will leave and go elsewhere and the problem just gets bigger and bigger.

So before you go investing in the latest scheduling software, or task management system, take a look to see how well the foundations have been laid first.

✨Here are three things you can do to start to build trust.✨

1️⃣ Individual interviews: In order to build trust, they first need to trust you. Setup private and confidential conversations to gather what’s bugging them, try and get to the route cause of the issue. A great question to help with this is “If you could change one thing about the team or how we work, what would it be, and why?”. If there are certain things you think would be useful for the whole team to be aware about ask them if it’s OK to share certain things (you don’t have to provide names, but present themes).

2️⃣ Team collaboration: Once you’ve given everyone space individually, you can start to move towards team collaboration. Try things like the sailboat exercise to gather information about what’s not working and also to remind them of the things that are going well too (as their is usually some lurking, even if they’re small). Explain that together you’re going to make improvements and that you need to collectively agree what needs to change.

3️⃣ Create team norms: Get the basics right. It helps create better communications and build better relationships within the team. Agree together how you’ll work with each other, how will you ask for help, what do deadlines mean, how should you provide feedback to each other.
