ОтветитьI was really disappointed in this video because it was titled, how the stoics build and maintain self-discipline, yet there wasn't any of that. It's just a commercial for his book. Fail.
ОтветитьThis Seneca guy is a wise man, I guess.
ОтветитьAhh yes… too much discipline is also a lack of discipline. Balance in all things is necessary
Ответить"Happy is he who makes others better" -- Seneca
“Happy is the man who can make others better, not merely when he is in their company, but even when he is in their thoughts!” - Seneca
"Your soul is dyed the color of your thoughts" - Marcus Aurelius
Background sound is disturbing
ОтветитьI have what's probably an unusual question for you. While I found a lot of value in your video, something that jumped out at me is your note card system. They look like 5x8 cards, and I'm curious where you got the container/organizer for them. I've been searching since I watched this video and am so far unable to find the container.
ОтветитьSeneca: "While we wait for life, life passes."
ОтветитьMost of it is in the brain and people are just wired differently. I don't think you can really change neurology.
ОтветитьI have a question for you, if they developed these great values, how did they lost it and unravelled?
ОтветитьYour content is great, thank you
ОтветитьIt was all good except for joe Rogan paid by the system no good if the government runs the show
ОтветитьI take a lot of wisdom from videos like this.
ОтветитьHi,
I am about to finish your book Discipline is Destiny. It was actually great read and useful book for me and I have finish all your books prior to that.
Under “The power of giving power away” chapter you mentioned Trump as one of the people who made worse by power together with Nero, Napoleon and Tiberius. That is biased and false logic to include Trump.
You have no facts and you are a democrat who is paid by corrupt politicians like Stacy Abrams whom you interviewed or part of your channel for MONEY!
So what do you think of the current situation under democrat Biden? You have no comment on that?
The Durham Report that just came out this week tells all the LIES about Russia Hoax? No comment about that?
I admire your work, but i think you are biased and corrupt too. You are blinded by corrupt media.
That is not Stoic for me.
I am deeply disappointed by your false characterization. 😞😞😞😞
How to apply the right amount of discipline in our lives? When it's too much? When it's too little? Big questions
Ответитьbe the happiest man you can ever be when u improve yourself you wont tell it to others cuz you love yourself
ОтветитьJoe Rogan. Yikes.
ОтветитьSo you're saying DON'T "be like Mike" (too old a reference?)
Ответитьread the stoic texts - they are all free!
ОтветитьExcellent!
Ответитьthank you ryan, genuinely. i’ve always wished more people knew about stoicism and you’re spreading the word.
history will thank you
Using Karl Popper's FALSIFICATION test it can be shown that DIFFICULT THINGS ARE NOT GOOD FOR YOU. e.g. Running a gang is difficult but is not good for you.
Some difficult things can be good for you while other difficult things will be bad for you.
Stoics who were very LOGIC-al in their thinking wouldn't endorse such generic statements.
Love this ❤
ОтветитьI wouldnt say "its not any better" if you have "too much discipline" and stop this you still have all your achievements. If you dont have discipline you dont achieve anything and even if you get disciplined then you start from zero.
ОтветитьI suffered from the idea that I needed to help everyone around when I first started my self discipine discovery. Man did I piss a lot of people off. I tried changing a lot of people to be like me. I became just as unhappy in the end. It took a long time to recover from that idea that I wasn't helping anyone by spreading what I was doing. I was just irritating people who never asked for it.
Now I've learned and embraced what "self" discipline truly means, and if someone disagrees with what I do, oh well, they're not me, and I'm not them.
I’d like to see an interview between Ryan Holiday and Jordan Peterson! Two powerful men who have changed my life for the better, I appreciate you, Ryan. The Obstacle Is The Way is my favorite book!
Oh, and thank you for Lives Of The Stoics. You have transformed me, Ryan. Without Stoicism, I would still be lost.
I like turtlenecks and tweed!
ОтветитьMan, really like Ryan when he’s not politicizing but rather, philosophizing. Great vid.
ОтветитьI should be finished 'Stillness is the Key' by the time, Discipline is Destiny arrives hopefully this week. Thank you Ryan your books are amazing.
ОтветитьThanks for sharing great ideas! greetings from Argentina!
ОтветитьMeh. 2 long commercials in a row I could not skip...I quit before I actually watch your content. I bought your book the Dialy Sotic but I will not be subscribing.
Ответить✍️
ОтветитьLove what you're doing Ryan! I've underlined some sentences of Courage is Calling and they can be mantras. Definite ah-ha moments. So simple yet so clear.
ОтветитьGotta go lighter on those swings. Form first!
ОтветитьSo excited for my copy arriving Tuesday!
ОтветитьWhere is the limit though. I've held myself to a high standard even before discovering stoicism. Buy at what point do you cut the slack? When do you stop caning yourself into the right position.
ОтветитьSelf obsession isnt self discipline!!
ОтветитьI am Greek and I cannot get enough of your videos. You are great .
Ответить106k views and only 5.6 k likes ? You gotta appreciate what Ryan's giving you here and click that like button
ОтветитьHow does noone see that this philosophy is about disconnecting from values? Values are that which one acts to gain or keep and virtue is the action that achieves value. Values are good and should be strived for because they make one's life better. No "moderation" needed.
Suffering and pain isn't instrinsicly good for you. Maybe you're saying effort is necessary in achieving values? The effort of focusing your mind on a task in order to accomplish it. Which I agree is difficult but so is digging a ditch to China. So digging a ditch to China must be good for me because it's difficult? If course not because things that are difficult aren't intrinicly good for you. The action must be attached to some goal or value that you desire.
Destiny is the perfect word for your deterministic philosophy. Death is the zero. These death worshiping philosophies pursue indifference as the proper attitude. If everything is predetermined by God's plan then everything that happened HAS to of happened. This idea when dealing with matter is correct. But when dealing with human conciousness it is not. Conciousness is not a stone rolling down a hillside. We can control it and choose to exert effort when and where we choose. No destiny.
And of course you should hold your standards up to others how else will you seperate the good from the bad, the friends from enemies, how would you choose a significant other? This man speaks in vague platitudes and doesn't make very important details explicit.
Remember leg day bro- Seneca
ОтветитьDo you get the bonuses if you preorder on audible?
ОтветитьMan, I am so disappointed that you brought "crazy anti-vaxxers" into your statement on your podcast on spotify, not only does it alienate listeners but it also clarify's your view on people like Joe Rogan who's show you appeared on, and other great podcasters such as Russell Brand. To suggest that this situation is so black and white that "covid conspirators" or "anti-vaxxers" must be crazy, is so misguided and naive, not to mention offensive. It seems you still have a lot of learning to do my friend. You've lost a fan.
ОтветитьDoes anyone else love everything Ryan Holiday says but is still turned off by him as a person?
ОтветитьDiscipline = Freedom
ОтветитьThe graveyard is full of indispensable men!
ОтветитьAlmost everyday when I go to work, I watch your videos. It is really important to start the day right, motivated and inspired. Thanks Ryan!🤘
