I truly felt bad for him. The guy just mostly wanted to do his job. However many circumstances kind of forced him to have to be the devil in the details. But luck and opportunity often saved the people that he was about to condemn or those that he already had to in other ways. Like how he took the gargoyle from Cain and Abel. But he gave them a newborn gargoyle in return as a sort of apology/reward for their sacrifice.
