For over 50 years the Beamish Living Museum of the North has been growing and preserving something of the history of the North East of England. The centre piece of the museum is the Victorian Town with shops and homes from that era preserved as a busy town centre. Homes of trades people and professionals like solicitors and dentists give an idea of times past. Nearby a preserved railway station and goods yard add to the picture (complete with steam engines). In town stables and coaches remind us of the transportation available prior to the advent of trains. The old Hall with its Georgian origins and the Home Farm with its pig stys, and a buzzing fair ground are just a few more of the areas to explore. While one can walk along pleasant paths between areas it is fun to use the vintage trams/streetcars which circle the site linking places of interest and adding so much animation and colour to the street scene in the "town". We spent a really interesting day this Spring while wandering a while.
