That’s a real beauty! I was lucky enough to snag one of the 50th anniversary Road Logics. I owe you some pics George. Such a sweet bike!

I don't get the 1x thing either, if the bike is a hardtail. I am running Ultegra RX clutch RD with 52-34 front and 11-40XT (Shimano Specs 34T, but clears 40T in real world) cassette on my gravel bike with no issues, that gets me up all the technical climbs I need while retaining good top speed on road. The clutch is nice so that when you suddenly stop pedaling, you don't get a chain jerk due to angular momentum of the big cassette.

I have a 2x gravel bike. I use it for both road riding. I’ve seen some gravel bikes with full suspension and I am shaking my head because it’s a xc mtb with dropped down handlebar. I think Niner makes them. I’d love to get the Ritchey logic one of these days. It’s like having a classic car with modern tech components.

That’s a beautiful frame! Can’t wait to follow the build. I don’t ride off-road much anymore but I have been thinking about building up a Swiss Cross to go along with my Road Logic and my Carbon Breakaway. All great bikes! And happy to hear your gal is doing better. ❤

I have a 2015 QR Disc Swiss Cross. It's a great bike.

Regarding included components with framesets. I recent bought a Trek Domane RSL frameset and thought it was weird that it didn't include a compression/expander plug or headset top cap. It also didn't come with steerer spacers for the optional integrated cable routing stem, though it did come with the headset cover... It did not come with the proprietary seatpost, but presumably that's because there are two setback options and two length options to choose from.

Great looking frame but very long chain stay at 453mm, don't think I've ever seen this type of frame with anything more than about 435mm.

Love my outback in sunset fade. The straight steerer is phenomenal in its suppleness. One of the best riding bikes I've had. Sold my trek checkpoint 😊
Waiting for my road logic disc to be built. Looking forward to that too. Hard to get the rim brake version in Australia
Keep the great content flowing

Sweet color - perhaps just a splash of bright red somewhere to set it off. Love how they thought of everything to make it last and keep it simple, like you don't even need to spray the inside of the frame. Great support - just email and someone knowledgeable writes back. Just got a brand new 1" Ritchey fork and WCS headset to update a late 90s Lemond 853 to threadless. They still make them - so someone in the know understands what that's all about. I've broken 2 11s Ultegra chains in the past year. The sideplate just pulled off the pin both times climbing a steep. The chains were mid-life but not worn. It makes me think 11s is where durability issues start going convex. I have 1X11s on a MTB and have never been happy with it - sounds like hell. Going back to 9/10 and 3X if needing range. 2X the durability for 1/2 the price - or something like that.

Excellent and informative video! What size is your frame and how tall are you? I've had my eye on the Outback for a few years, but the sizing seems quirky. Going by my Road Logic sizing (53 cm), it seems like I'd fall between small and medium. Any thoughts on what size a 5'8" person should consider? Thanks!

Such a classy frame, color, and build. Agree with metal frames off tarmac for durability. External under downtube routing excellent for tarmac for less fuss, not the best with off CX/gravel/mtb bikes due gunk build up zone on the cables. Old CX canti/v-brake race frame as the routing on top of the top tube. Ride the dirt bike when the weather turns bad or rougher roads on tarmac. Then keep the road bike clean for most of the days. One reason I go with CX/gravel bikes for that reason for general use. Thoes mega long dirt rides sounds like fun. Tough call looking over the ritchey 50th ani. frame due to a limited run which makes it a special frame from a well known quality frame maker to get another which is more common with less quality.

I'm excited for you and excited to see your build on the frame. I've been eyeing that Ritchey Outback since it came out and once they dropped the anniversary edition, I was wow'd by the paint job! I will pull the trigger this wee! On another note, I've worked in the bike industry for 15+ years and want to tell you I agree with you, I now want a steel frame bike. Carbon bikes are great but sometimes it just seems like it "the industry" is designed to SELL you a newer version of something thatis perfectly made. After 15+ years i;ve come to the conclusion, there's nothing like a well designed steel frame.

I hope you dig it George. I also own a Swiss Cross Canti (and previously owned the road logic). The 2020 outback is unique compared to those — I have it set up with 650b Shimano GRX which works beautifully. I would encourage you to try hydro brakes on it (and test 650b - it’s great fun). My wife isn’t much of a cyclist but her preferred bicycle out of my stable is the Outback due to it’s stability.

Zipp aluminum seat post with a wtb saddle. Wheels are HED emporia wrapped in vittoria 35mm tires. SRAM rival two bi etap electric groupset. All cables are ran externally. Just a heads up, I litterally just dropped my 50th anniversary Outback off at RideWrap in Whistler so they can 3D scan and make a tailored wrap kit that will cover 95% of the frame. If this is Medium, then there will be a kit available for you shortly

Beautiful Frame! I just bought a new steel frame bike for road/gravel use. I was happy to hear you mentioned about the rear derailleur hanger, I bought a spare one for my bike. I had the option of internal or external cable routing. I went internal so it wouldn't get in the way of my bags. Now after watching this, I wish I hadn't.

I bought a Marin Nicasio since weight doesn't really matter, and it came with headset and bottom bracket, and had 73.5 seat tube, 102 wheel base. Frame is made in Indonesia. Not a climber, but very very mechanic friendly frame.. Same headtube shape as the Ritchey.

I've got a steel Ritchey tubed Scott Pro Racing mtb frame from the 90s with fillet brazed seat cluster weighs nearly 3lbs so it is really light. I made it into a monstercross gravel bike, 1x10, Microshift barend shifter, carbon fork and it is amazing on or offroad so comfortable too.

Everything you touched from steel to disc to one by is all agreed upon from were am sitting. Gravel demands comfort, and what better way than the best metal on earth. Steel. I can’t find any info on that special parts these model comes with? I recently seen one talk about it at Sea Otter but didn’t catch the brand name? I want to get
My hands on those parts,,crank and cable hydro brake setup. I’m also building up a steel steed, has semi internal cable housing and newer head tube it’s under 2Kgs which is surprisingly good. Just need to find a decent carbon fork as the steel one is complex with 15 thru axle
And ugly adapter brace welded on. Otherwise made by a master frame builder with insane workmanship, dare I say even better than your frame! 😜

George, maybe you know the bike, it's a Ritchey Ti front triangle/carbon seat stays road bike, would you happen to know what that model is? I've only seen one ever on the road, very similar in look and geometry to my Serotta

Awesome video, cannot agree more, I owned the previous green color one, loved it in every way but climbing, the rear end its so long for it, but in flatter surfaces and downhill it's an awesome machine, I ended up changing it to a Swiss Cross. I also got a Logic and a MTB Ultra, love them all, that secret sauce it's kind of addictive, Cheers from Barcelona/Spain.

Just got mine (and didn’t even realize how lucky.. 650 units?!)!

Agree with all your points. I knew and admired Ritchey from growing up in the 90s on MTBs, but never really got the whole “not all progress is progress” ethos. So many years later I absolutely get it. A Swiss Cross Disc I built in 2017 forever changed the way I view what I need from a bike, and this beautiful blue Outback is just checking the last remaining boxes. Happy riding!
