Beautiful house indeed, but for me it doesn't look like Asian at all, except for one wooden cabinet I saw

House itself is SO GORGEOUS but the furnishings inside definitely do not stand up to the architecture. I hope she was just getting started on the interiors when this was filmed... !

What a smart, simple design. I love it. I would never have thought a true pavillion style would work in such an environment but work it does. Nice one.

Kevin McCloud has no mind of his own and agrees with everything people do. He’s forward and searches around peoples new homes as if he’s the police searching for drugs. On the advert you see him breaking a door that he’s trying to open. Channel 4 Grand Design needs a new Television Presenter.

Lovely, perfect for the Gretta.
I love how she considered her guests and had two spare rooms, even though she would have no need, it shows a natural thought to other's comfort and well being.

Personally, I would have built a bigger gap between the two houses, but that is pretty much the only change I would make.

Fabulous design style. Tons of room. Not cluttered ...bright clean. And joyful with the outside space adjoining the home...and being next door to your sister...well what more would you need.....❤️❤️....the home is filled with love ...can tell easily. Great memories. Along the way from her travels..

Metal structure with SIP's panels in between. How can that possibly work and be allowed in the building code because each part of the metal structure in that roof with create a thermal bridge?????

an intelligent architect must design according to existing site condition...but the removal of the apple tree makes him think like a contractor..

It is really unfortunate that the 100 year old apple tree could not be incorporated and designed into the house itself. They could have made it work and certainly honored it with the pride of place it deserved! Truly a shame!

So, they killed a 100 year old tree to build a house for 1 person? The tree would still be living long after she is death...

Shed/box, rather than architecture. And that's coming from a huge fan of modernism. This just doesn't work visually.

WOW!! It's off the charts fantastic. Love it, lots of space and NO Stairs.. which I have hated since 12 yrs old, when my wonderful grandfather fell down the stairs and did not survive. What a fantastic sister and brother in law. Magnificent result.

Awesome! They have done great in many aspects. The view to the outside is in my opinion the best. But there is one thing that I do not understand these days. Where are the Photovoltaic panels? Any new build house today should have a PV system ! They should be mandatory!

Why does one person living alone need a 4 bedroom house!! A 2/3 bedroom place still would have been huge for her.

Although there are similarities between this house and our barn conversion, there are obvious differences. We played with the idea of an all-white theme, letting lights and furniture stand out from that. But, for us, it was too stark. So, we are painting the walls off-white and many rooms will have one wall of a darker colour. Our bedroom is going to be wallpapered with one from the William Morris collection.

I’m really glad that the steel structure went well. Our architects worked with our main contractor and a specialist steel frame company. We had 55% of pieces of steel come to site too long or too short. You can understand 1 or 2 - but over half? It turned out that our so-called specialist steel frame company were buying the cold rolled steel (some 18” x 5”) from another company and, speaking to the draughtsman at that company, the plans supplied were inadequate. Now, I blame both of them - the steel frame people for not supplying adequate drawings and the rollers for not insisting on clear plans.

It was always the plan for our contractor to bolt the new frame elements together and to the old frame elements. We (as the people paying) said that we are not paying a penny more than had been agreed and, in the end, our contractor got paid handsomely well for all the extra time involved in cutting lengths to the right size and got a load of additional steel where the pieces had been cut too short. We got the building but the delay was months. I could tell a tale of woe where the steel frame problem turned out to be the least of our problems. If people want to read it, I will write it.

I love the simplicity of the home and the views to the garden from many aspects. Shame about the apple tree, might have been nice to see if it could have been moved.

I have seen many makeover/build shows and I never really 'get' the desire for such large open-plan spaces, which combine the kitchen, dining and living areas. Practically it calls for very good heating systems, insulation and measures to deal with solar gain from all that glass, as well as ventilation to deal with steam and cooking odours. The waft of baking bread may be pleasant, but being reminded of a brace of kippers hours after breakfast is not. For a single person or couple it might be OK (although I like to be able to close the kitchen door) to have the same surroundings for everything, and I can see that for a family with young children being able to supervise is a bonus, even if it does mean toys all over the floor. But when they become teenagers the personal/living space becomes the bedroom. If good fences make better neighbours - as the saying goes - maybe the opportunity to have dividing walls - even sliding/folding ones should at least figure somewhere in the plans?
