She doesn't say at what age she went to Australia. If she went there when she was under 14 it's quite possible for her to become reasonably proficient in English(as she is) in 3 years as a full time student. At her current age it would take about 10 yrs.

Even knowing Japanese (around 7/10 level) when I first went to Japan in 1998, I made no friends at all- you will NOT make friends knowing no language- trust me.
