And why wouldn't the govt have just had him killed to ensure he never exposed them. He was all over the place and talked so freely. But why would this never have come out from Charlie himself ? Or one of his followers trying to get a better deal, or just to help Charlie. Charlie couldn't shut up ... this doesn't add up.

CIA involvement makes no sense unless there was a bad batch distributed. We know those convicted did the murders, as for Manson’s involvement, how could the CIA control him in this way and allow him the liberty to speak out from jail without any assurance that he wouldn’t spill the beans?
